Starter woes.

I’ve seen it once on a 6.5. Something went crazy in The solenoid, it cranked until the side posts melted out of the batteries (never starting because the key was off).

Two guys went through the harness independently then together- no issues were found. Stater was smoked obviously.
New starter, new batteries, all was fine.

A service truck. I can’t remember what type starter it was, might have been a delco but idk. This was 20 years ago.

Once removed, I hooked up a set of jumper cables to test the starter and it started cranking as soon ground as the main cable was hooked up.

does the issue stop when you remove the starter relay in the underhood box?

I have a 2000 C2500 6.5 that is doing the same thing, removing the relay stops it so I feel that eliminates everything but cab wiring or switches. 97? I believe? and newer went to a wonky dual function clutch safety switch on the manuals and since its also tied into the cruise Im going to replace it as a precaution, but im really leaning towards the ignition switch.
mine being a 2000 the previous owners managed to get the wrong key lock cylinder (gmt800) so I have a proper GMT400 Key cylinder, now I need to get it tagged and title swapped to me so I can have the local GM dealer cut keys to the VIN and calibrate the new lock cylinder, then I can install it and the new switch, and if that fixes it, then its time for the new clutch, and bilsteins, then its ready to do some towing. If it doesnt fix it, it will stay parked till I mess with it some more!
