OK, was under the 92 the other day and found out that it doesn't have a bracing braket on the end of the starter, so of course, now i have some questions. :rolleyes5:

1) It mounts to the end of the starter itself, right? (opposite of drive, nothing to do w/ solenoid)

2) What is the right PN?

Starter Motor Bracket OEM - 14028931
Starter Motor Bracket OEM - 23502557
This is what I got from the reference Library, and IDK which one to buy.

3)What is the PN of the bolt for the bracket? the big ones are listed, and so is the size of the little one, but if it isn't bad, Id like to run a nice OEM bolt that i know is right.

4) how important is it to use OEM hardware for the two big bolts?

5) is there supposed to be studs sticking out on the starter for the brace?

14028931 - is used on 88-89 6.2L Diesels

23502557 - is used on 90-92 6.2L Diesels, 92-02 6.5L Diesels

now, does anyone know what the bolt PN is?

If I were you, I'd probably just find the right size bolt/thread and use it. I normally keep a decent amount of bolts laying around... Not sure what size/type of bolt it takes though.

bracket to block bolt, M 8 x 20 x 1.25
bracket to starter could be either 1/4" UNC or M 6,I have seen both.

Q # 4, the OEM bolts have a knurled part above the treads for proper line up purposes.

GM p/n 11515755 list $4.46/ea
M8 X 1.25 X 18

bison, you had the size down, but i found this in a post from benjammin on a thread in the classifieds. now i have the PN!

I was just gonna post that here too. With tax it would come out to about 5 bucks for a fawkin bolt! Not 4 bolts, just 1!. You best bet is doing what I did, go to lowes and pick up the bolt there. 92 cents

IIRC, the HELP section at the part store usually have the long bolt also. Just have to find the right length, they are knurled bolt. So it does not have to be OEM or stealership item. However, if you are going there anyway to get the bracket, might as well get or order the bolt at the same time.

I'd get the OEM bolts. Not only are they knurled, but they are rated at the right strength. I'd hate to have a problem with a starter and have it blow a chunk off my block because I overkilled with improper bolts.

Probably woulnd't happen or help, but what a shame to lose a block due to a snapped corner.

I just picked the bolt up tonite and got it in. Getting at that thing is a PITA!!! Had the jack the front of the truck up and I couldn't slip a ratched on the bolt cause of some stupid wire loom that had to conviently run itself right where I needed the wrench. And the damn wire loom was so tight i couldn't move it out of the way! Spent 10 minutes inching it along with a wrench. I did end up going with the bolt from Sears. M8x1.25x20. Cost me 43 cents. It couldn't be any worse than before. I was running without that stupid bolt before and knock on wood it didn't rip off the block.

Starter Bracket P/N's

As already answered, yes indeed.

2) What is the right PN?

Starter Motor Bracket OEM - 23502557

For a '92, you should want the 23502557. This assumes you have the gear reduction style starter. If you have the older direct drive type for some reason, you'd want the 14028931.

3)What is the PN of the bolt for the bracket? the big ones are listed, and so is the size of the little one, but if it isn't bad, Id like to run a nice OEM bolt that i know is right.

The old P/N of 11513703 has been superceded by this new one, as another post cited: 11515755. This bolt is the priciest of any of these parts. And the most generic, from what I can tell. It should be used with an 8mm lockwasher.

4) how important is it to use OEM hardware for the two big bolts?

From what I gather, it *is* fairly important. Correct yield strength for the specified torque, knurled shaft, and apparently the bolts may have something to do with the "no shim" requirement.

GM P/N 115544950 - 2 req'd.

5) is there supposed to be studs sticking out on the starter for the brace?

Again, as previously noted, just one.

Is there an echo in here?

Just wanted to put all the info in one place.

yes.

Starter bolt broke off up in the block in my wife's gasser a couple weeks ago. I bought a Dorman bolt (one) from Carquest to get me by. The end still needed filed down by about 1/8". Bolt cost me $9. Bought the correct bolts (two) at the dealership later the same day and the pair cost me under $3. You can take a chance with the aftermarket on that if you like, but I would not. My idea of fun doesn't include laying in a snow covered parking lot when it's 10-15 degrees out messing with a bolt that has broken off up in the block.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this...but

My husband is having a problem with the starter on his 1995 Silverado 1500/6.5. The starter keeps working loose. There was no brace on it when it snapped the bolts, found this forum and figured out it needed one and put it on. It's still working loose...how can he fix this? Is there another brace or something?
