Starter heat shield problem exhaust stud or bolt?

I made up a scenario to justify it. mechanic was mad at customer for having 100 lbs or more of real estate packed up into the underbelly of the truck, and after having 2 lbs of dirt dumped down his neck and backside, he said **** it and put them in however was quickest. :)

the PO has apparently had this truck frame deep before, lots of mud.... not bad for a 2wd.. :)

A lot of "mechanics" are nowadays called "technicians". They don't give a rats ass as they are paid to replace parts fast at a flat rate and certainly are not going to R&R a U-joint once it is in.

Thanks for the link in this thread on the starter parts. I've got a bent bolt and have to replace it. I found the threads were an M10x1.5, but wasn't sure on the length. Turns out to be 110 Lg. and the hardness is 9.8 (P/N #15544950).

I ordered the bracket for the front tip of the starter. Man, when I got the one for my other truck, it was $3 or so. Now it's $13!! Not to mention the bolt is $4 from the dealership. I opted for a hardware store version for three quarters plus tax.

man, I have seen the front bracket as high as 30 bucks. you must have an awesome dealer! :)

I guess the forums keeping everyone aware have kept GM's sales volume on the bracket high enough to keep costs down!

Finally got it. I was trying to put the bracket on the wrong stud. The wire loom was moved down to the stud the bracket mounts to.
I did the exact same thing. Plenty of head scratching before I figured out that I was missing the target.

Got this all together today. The pain was getting the starter holes lined up with those in the block. For the bracket, I put the bolt in the block, loose, and let the bracket hang. I positioned the starter, swung the bracket down onto the stud and ran the nut on. Just a lock washer and nut on the stud - no jam nut - wouldn't fit square if I would have done this.
