Starter heat shield problem exhaust stud or bolt?

1998 Suburban

I'm trying to install the starter heat shield.

I am having trouble with the rear mounting clip. It seems to be hitting the exhaust stud for the cross over pipe.

Should there be a bolt there instead?

If so what size would the bolt be?

Any ideas?
 
The starter is off. I

The bracket won't go on as it is hitting the exhaust stud.
The stud is pretty long.
I was wondering if anybody else ever had this problem & how they remedied it.
Looks to me, if I replaced the offending stud with a bolt I would be OK. I shot it with Knocker loose before I came in.
 
Put the bracket on first,there should be a short bolt on it to hold the slotted lip of the shield on that side.
I cant see how it would interfere with the exh stud(should be a bolt there anyway)
 
I am about to tackle this tomorrow, and lets assume the cowboys that trashed a 4L80E in 70K miles also threw away the little bracket that holds the back of the heat shield when they put a new trans in. is the bracket NLA?

where does the front of the shield fasten to?

so definitely best to secure the shield first, then put the starter in?

The front of the heat shield goes behind the starter brace. The back of the heat shield goes one bolt down from where I was trying to put it. I do not remember if it was a stud or bolt. Guess I should have shared better when I did it. My apologies.

The bracket referred to is the starter brace. There is no additional bracket at the bell housing. I saw a picture someplace at the time that showed the heat shield directly beneath the stud the wire loom attached to. In my case that had been moved down one stud/bolt at some point in time.

I think it was that site with all the schematics that I can not get to anymore. Or Nalley buick maybe. I think I found the parts schematic by searching the part number.
 
ok, so front of shield goes between block and starter bracket, or between bolt head and starter bracket?

and the rear of the shield just goes over a bellhousing bolt with a nut holding it tight?
 
The front goes between the starter bracket and block. I can not remember if the back was a bolt or stud. I think it was a stud. If you google the part number for the heat shield, you should find a link to Nalley , GM parts direct or another site that shows the location. If I get time I will post a link.
 
OK, called in to my friendly local GM dealer and had him look it up according to VIN, and he said the front went under the starter brace bracket bolt, and the back fastened to a bracket. that bracket is the 10191435, and is not available anymore, and he would have to wait till tuesday to call his NOS independent outlet he deals with.

I just happened to remove a bracket 1/2 hr ago from a truck i'm in the process of changing the clutch on

center 11 mm hole to edge of corner 1 3/8"
8 mm bolt center to edge of corner 5/8".
The lip bottoms out against the bell housing to prevent the bracket from sagging when tightening the stud.

so the bracket goes under the bolt head, not on the backside of the head with a nut?

ok, dug around in my stuff and found the same bracket that Bison has, and got it installed. it appears to only go on one way, the little "tip" hanging down so it can bump into the bellhousing. bolt sticks straight out. I cursed the previous owner and crossed my fingers when I threaded the SAE grade 5 3/8 bolt back into the bellhousing :O I assume they stripped the threads and heli-coiled it, but that would be doing it right, they probably put the SAE bolt in when they lost the original bolt. it seemed to tighten up though...

heatshield went in OK. up front, it needs to go under the starter bracket, this became rather self explanatory when I saw the bracket, no way was it going over a raised lip to go under the bolt head. of course the bracket was attached to the starter, but not to the block. thanks again jerks. :( so I bought a new proper bolt from GM, and got it close to tight, torqued the main bolts (a pair of new from GM) to 40 lb/ ft, and then snugged the 3rd bracket up.

So, heatshield is in, bracket is on, everything buttoned up, new used front tires on, so now we are down to the radiator and the rear tires, and trying to grease some u-joints the PO put in with no regard to how much room is on either side of a yoke. if he would have paid attention, 2 of the 3 would have been flipped 180 degrees. oh well. :(

Common mistake i am sometimes still guilty of, same as not having all the zerks in line on a drive shaft.
chit happens ;)
