The 1996 Suburban is using quite a lot of coolant. I'm getting it checked out tomorrow.

It just eats me alive having to take everything in right now. 3 lb weight limit doesn't allow for much.

I'm guessing head or head gasket at the least. No other symptoms. It's not leaking out. It also doesn't appear to be going in the oil. Unless it's leaking out as fast as it's leaking in. LOL

I will also need a set of head studs.

Does anybody have an outlet on a known to be good set of heads?

What are my options there? I saw a running engine for sale with 90,000 miles on it for a not bad price.

I can drive a fair ways to pick up parts. It's not like I'll miss work or anything. Just a little PT.

Also going to need gaskets.

Can some body supply me with a parts list?

Thanks
Jeff

Jeff,

Shoot Barry a request, I might have a way to get them back here to Ill if he has anything up there in his warehouse of parts...that is unless you need them quickly.

False alarm on my part. Turned out to be a leaking hose/bad hose clamp. Feel foolish paying somebody for that. But it is what it is.

Actually feel kind of funny about paying for almost everything. It definately was not worth the risk of letting it go til I got to look at it. For the quantity of coolant being lost, I would have thought the leak would have been more obvious. Pressure checked and good. I appreciate that it was properly diagnosed.

Love easy fixes!!! The hard part is the diagnosis. LOL!!!

Have similar one this week with my upper radiator hose clamp is loosening overtime creating puddles on the ground.

Glad to hear of the GOOD NEWS

If you ever find the need for heads. Clearwater Cyl head sells new heads for around $600 a set

I have used them and they are good parts.

New castings, not rebuilt heads.
After fooling with the 6.5's for such a long time, I would not use any used heads.

Just too much work to go through to find out you got a bum one.

As far as studs go, I prefer the tried and true TTY Bolts on these engines.

Felpro sells the kits and they are not at all spendy.

Again, glad you found that it was a simple fix.

YEA I am torn about new and used heads. I have an engine that has about 90k USA Miles :) on it and was hesitant to go with used heads. For one thing I didn't want to test heads that might have stress cracks between the valves on the engine for water jacket leaks.

Since these engines don't have a lot of bolt clamping force / head gasket issues I would not have a issue with stock bolts. At least these days the dealer monkeys know better then to reuse TTY bolts. If the budget allows it at the time I will go with ARP bolts.

What does it cost to get used heads tested these days? Does that tell you what you need to know?

First you have to find a head shop ;) that has or still has a test plate for the 6.X heads. cost??? 30-40 bucks, 30-40 min task. If a stress crack between the valves goes deep enough to bubble, there is a repair procedure. But all said and done I am wondering when you can get what seems to be acceptable new castings for under 300$ each why go all through that. Recycling the valve train if its serviceable, on new castings, may be the way to go.

I wouldn't ever go for the repair procedure. The 94 had it done and seems to be doing fine, but for the money why bother?
Indeed. The new castings are supposed to have more cooling flow through the prechamber / valve area. Maybe more nickel too.

I am wondering if there is any point in, or if I even can, use my nice diamond precups in them instead of the ones that comes in them?
