Smoke

Hi again.

The question.
My 95 6.5 TD throws black smoke as I accelerate.
Once it speeds up, it stops the black smoke and clears up.
Runs good otherwise.
Thanks.

My 1500 has the EGR deleted and will smoke on and off under acceleration, I think it is just the stock tune cutting boost.

I haven't had a chance to touch it since I posted this.
It won't be until tomorrow maybe Monday that I'll be able to do anything.

It's a K@N filter.

THANKS to all who posted.

He's got EGR on a 1500 that may be leaking or stuck open. Pull codes. Checking the turbo is checking that you get vacuum to the wastegate. Described in depth here: http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/threads/reference-material-turbo-wastegate-system.2648/
Signature says 1500 suburban, so no egr valve as ALL 6.5L suburbans got F engines. S engines were mostly for 6 lug trucks and 2 door suv's.

To the OP, do you have a boost guage? Black smoke is too much fuel for the engine to burn cleanly, so it's either an airflow restriction, lack of boost, or over fueling(bad pump or injectors dumping fuel). I would start with getting a boost guage on it and see if you're making any boost 1st.

Mine is hooked into the intake manifold covers pipe that goes to the turbo.
I do not know if there is an existing hole/plug or if a hole has to be drilled and tapped.
Mine was installed when I purchased the truck.

Buy the "turbo boost bolt" from Leroydiesel.com
Is the easiest thing. Take out the factory bolt and screw in the new one. Then your line goes into it. I know Leroy sells airline kits, can't remember if he has gauges also.

Otherwise, remove part of the intake system like the upper intake-drill, tap, clean, reinstall. Then install your line there.

I live in the desert with the obvious fine sand in the air on windy days, so I wont try it in a dusty day... but I remove the air filter and do a test run to ensure that isn't the culprit. Quick freebie test, but Still get a boost gauge on it.

Followed later by a fuel pressure gauge -not needed for current problem, but nice plan both at same time. Maybe even run the lines and mount both at same time, but DO NOT open the fuel system to tie in until this problem is solved. No need to possibly accidentally add another issue.

Get rid of the harmful K&N filter. It lets more dirt by, clogs sooner, and generally doesn't live up to the marketing fraud it is. Air and oil filters are the most important thing on an engine making choice of oil a moot discussion. Once dusted by a bad air filter the rings are grinding stones. A bad oil filter can clog oil passages and quickly take an engine out.

You will be surprised how fast the flat paper air filter loads up let alone a K&N.

So replace air filter and than, again, follow the link to check out the vac and wastegate system that controls the turbo. In stock form these engines should not noticeably roll black smoke. You loose vacuum the WG flops open = no boost.
