SM465 swap for "The Rust Bucket"

I thought his was an '85. really it's a 3 speed with low. You start with 1st not low for normal driving. low is called granny gear for a reason. top speed is mine is about 8mph with the 4.10's. there's no differnce between the gasser or diesel version in the tranny itself, just the bellhousing.

8 mph top speed?? You have a CUCV too ???

driveshafts may be different. Grab those too.

The driveshafts from the "donor" 88 K-5 come with everything else. The shafts should be the correct length for the SM465/np208 considering both trucks are 106.5" wheel base yes?

Im going to start on this same deal soon, will update after I tear into it.

I just got a 82 parts truck with a 454 and Sm465 4 speed. Im going to swap the 4 speed into my 6.2 cucv 1 ton. I want to have the granny gear avail to pull down a house if needed. And I want to eliminate the worry about boiling over the Turbo 400 towing.

Also seems like the auto wastes power, no slippage in the 4 speed.

Will be going to 4.10 axle gearing and a divorced transfer case.

Also gonna swap the 454 into my blown up 92 Dually.

Cool!. the Sm465 and 4.10s may be a screamer as 3rd is 1:1. There's no overdrive. the low gear will certainly pull down a house. I believe it's 6.55:1 for the Low gear. I just got home from picking up my SM465/NP208 a short while ago.

Well right now it has 4.56 gears in it!!! So 4.10 will be better, and I have the gears already. This truck will be a worker and not a highway cruiser so Im not worried about getting anywhere in a hurry.

If life were perfect(money wise) I'd like to keep my TH400 and put a Gear Vendors overdrive on it. Probably cheaper to just use a 4l80e with a standalone but I seriuosly considered using a 4l80e with a manual Valve body.

it worked when it wanted to. too many headaches to keep it happy. I gave up when the TCC was shot, the TPS was on it way out, and the main harness leaked like a sieve.

Thread hijack- I have to finish this trailer project first, built a new neck for my gooseneck trailer. I have a few more days of welding left doing crossmembers and doublers. Its a 20 ft deckover plus 5 ft dovetail, 2-10,000 lb axles, has dual piston hydraulic disc brakes both axles

Then I will tear into the 4 speed swap on the CUCV truck- the white one in this pic. I think im going to go with a flatbed on it also. Just gotta get the trailer done first, I have finally learned to get one thing done before fully tearing into the next project.

well since I now learned something , that these bodystyle did have hyd clutch in later years I would be looking for 5spd. That I would do.

I thought about that, but a hydr clutch master and slave are just 2 more things that can and will eventually break down and also add a couple hundred dollars to cost.
