:WTF: Silver coating falling off tank?

My 1993 pickup has had power loss off and on. Removed last ditch FFM screen that was plugged. Then removed plugged screen in Walbro fuel pump. Now I dropped a tank because the last cure of screen removal lasted 5 days. Engine lost all power over 2K and then started to surge in 1 day, 30 miles. (I appear to have had some Biodiesel start to go bad and plug the screens.) I have been running #2 diesel for 30 days though.

See pics.

This is a silver colored lining coming off the tank sides. The screen is plugged and the bypass is plugged up with this silver stranded stuff that appears to be from missing patches on the tank wall. It is soft like paint.

Do I need a used tank or can I clean this one out?

That is definitely not algae, nor is it polymerization of the bio caused by contact with steel or copper/brass. I have seen those and that aint it. Wonder if somebody put something in ur tank or if u got a contaminated batch of bio? Was ur bio homemade or storebought at a station?

Oh yeah, The two bolts I hadn't removed. Tank straps!

Bio is from a local refiner. Other vehicle only had a nasty fuel filter so far from that batch. The 93 has gone through like 1300 Gal of the stuff vs. the other ride.

Time for a new tank. They are not that expensive, cheaper than pumps and injectors. Might try Raybuck, new tank is about$107.00

Fords look to severely have this problem - aluminum coating coming off the tank. Thanks for the heads up on the cheapness of tanks.

Finally got the new tank Monday and installed yesterday. She runs again. $200 for the tank and sender/pickup assy. Nice to have my old trusty friend back except the fresh rebuilt alternator is loudly chirping now...

My internal tank terne coating evenly failed top bottom & sides. Plugged my filter every 500 miles with rust & terne flakes. Just got a new spectra premium tank from rockauto and it did not fit properly. The original GM tank's welded seam is bent down at a 90 angle the replacement is bent at a 45, the straps are now too short, can't tighten against the crossmember, they are a dangerous 1 1/4" short and untorqued. Not good. Have ratchet straps as a safety backup. Wrote spectra premium and did not get far....

I used a bigger hammer and air power (tools) and made quick work of that seam angle issue. Mine only had to bend the angle slightly and the strap bolts did the rest. I guess I am used to finish work on the low quality parts anymore. GM my cost is around $700 and none in stock or available.

I am sure the stress cracks from this do not help the coating.

The fuel sock was cr@p vs. the OEM having no bypass valve or low fuel mesh difference.
