Shell Rotella oils

So anybody have any advise to the original question about the Rotella HD synthetic 10w-30?

Yes.... don't use it. I'd run 15W40 conventional Rotella before I'd run the thinner oil. Our engines specify 40 weight oil, so I'd run 40 weight oil. Yes, we sometimes run 0-40 or 5-40 instead of the 15-40 specified, but its the higher number that protects under heavy load or in high heat.

I'm running Amsoil now. I've heard complaints about the cost, but I can't say I've heard many complaints about quality.

Yeah I went to Auto Zone to get my filter(mobil 1 M1-302) and seen that they had it on the shelf for 24.99 a gallon. If I don't hear other wise in the next month and a half, I guess I'll have to pony up the cash for the higher price.:mad2: I did read somewhere that someone was running the 10w-30 in Cali for towing in the desert.

John

I hope you mean you bought the Mobil 1 M1 303. 302 is not the correct filter.

I like Amsoil...

Honestly, Mobil 1 is one of the WORST Synthetics on the market. It's better than some conventionals and blends, but compared to other synthetics, it's become crap in the past few years. Instead of raising the price, like everyone else has, they've cheapened up the formula.

I currently have 100% amsoil in our duramax, our Gator, and our lawnmower's engines. Change the oil once a year, and other than checking the level, forgeddabout it.

If I may ask, what is your basis for stating the Mobil 1 is one of the "Worst" synthetics? What other synthetics are better in your opinion? Rotella, which is a very good oil has just come out with their new fully synthetic oil, but it is so new, I haven't heard any comments either way on it.

The listing in the book has been the M1-302 every time I have to look it up. And yes I have to look it up every time I buy one. I have a great case of brain farts when I get to the wall o filters for some reason. Unless you are talking about another engine other than the 6.5 that I have.:D

John

I looked on Autozone's online site and when I selected '95 K2500 6.5 diesel it comes up with M1-302.

John,
My bad. I din't even notice that you had the 6.5. I must have glanced at the 2007 wheels by mistake and thought you had the 6.6.
I had used Rotella in both versions for a few years but I didn't have much luck with it like most people. Most times the Rotella had a funny smell to it, and it blew by more smoke out the vent leading to a dirty air filter. When I went back to Mobil 1 TD, the problem went away.

No worries.

When I switched, I had noticed, after about 100 miles, I had a smoother, quieter running motor. I had a disagreement with a filter one time and dumped about two quarts on the floor of the garage. I can tell you the stuff is slicker. And harder to get out of jeans after sliping and falling in the puddle. After that I really think gravity sucks.

After re-reading my post, it may have sounded like I was saying most people don't have much luck with the Shell Rotella. Actually I was saying most people have had good luck with the Shell, but I didn't. Sorry if led you to believe I though Rotella was a bad oil.

I'm running Amsoil now. I've heard complaints about the cost, but I can't say I've heard many complaints about quality.

I run extended intervals with my Amsoil and bypass filtration to keep the cost manageable, my high time oil sample thus far has been 20K miles, sample I sent in last week had 20,448 miles on it, TBN was getting borderline low, at the last sample 12K miles ago in Nov. I have never had a sample come back yet that said I HAD TO change my oil.

I just put in new injectors and changed the 15 micron primary and 2 mic bypass element and a fresh fill of 15W40 synthetic , I'm hoping to run the next oil out to 25-30K or until they tell me oil is out of specs. by sample.

I ran Rotella dino oil forever and got good service with it running bypass elements, but get better service with the synthetic oil.

I just came back from Wally World today. They have plenty of Shell Rotella 5W-40 T-6 Synthetic on the shelves. Maybe they waited for the new blue plastic containers with the T-6 name change???????? I also change my oil once a year, as I have the FS2500 bypass oil filter and an additional 2 micron 1R0749 CAT fuel filter. The oil analysis says I could go on, but I change it anyway. I usually average about 14K per year.

I don't have a by pass filter set up so I have been changing mine at 5k. I know I can go longer but would rather be safe than sorry. As a daily driven pick up, I'm putting 104 miles a day on it. I guess it's time to pony up the cash for the by pass set up.

John: It would pay for itself in no time. Not only in oil, but in your labor as well. If you do an oil analysis on your oil at the 5K interval just for your own benefit and piece of mind, you will see how much you have left in your oil. You'll want a by-pass system right away.

Yeah I found a company localy that was hiden for years, that carries the stuff to make one. Basicly they sell the heads and the filters seperatly. They also sell exhaust parts and kits for cheap. Basicly all things diesel and on the cheap. Like they have AFE exhaust kits for around 150 bucks to unload them.

PM me for the web site if you want it.

Bypass oil filters are fairly complex. I would stick with a well known, well developed system. Something like the Amsoil or FS2500 setup.
