Seems like no power with the trailer.

Yeah, the 6.5 went over it's limit about 1/4 mile ago and it took this long to get to a stop... Watch your step as the hot oily puddles will stain the carpet from your shoes. :rolleyes5:

We screwed up on one point in the article by not figuring the engine sensor pegs at 17 PSI boost. Later when I could afford a boost gauge I found the ATT would hit 18 PSI+ depending on load and another HX40II turbo went to 24 PSI. Same power at 14 PSI with the ATT and 24 PSI on the HX40II on the dyno rollers. (Backpressure, IAT, etc. make more of a difference than boost #'s alone.)

The BD spool valve another member lead the way with was a new level: unloaded in town hot rod, but, not required for sustained heavy towing.

Seriously, a better large turbo takes a lot of strain off the engine. Via less heat load and less back pressure trying to make power in the upper RPM when you need it and it shows up as more power and better MPG. The 6.5 is a high RPM diesel - more so than a Cummins for both peak TQ and HP and the RPM it delivers it - with major changes to the 6.5. Otherwise a 6.5 is a dog with a load. Minor changes get it zippy unloaded. But, unloaded is not my major use.

There are other ways to make power with the 6.5 - the ATT is just one of them that is off the shelf as a kit.

When you get here Monday maybe we will have some time for a ride in mine, you can get a taste of a 35/40 holset and watch my gauges....

In fact, if you really want to see how "old blue" pulls I might could drag the horse trailer, that would be 17,000 lbs gross.....

I'm betting there's a set of wide open eyes in the passenger seat of your truck pretty soon Chris...:D

Who knows... I figure he is going to be stopping for a M&G and he has a thread or two looking for info, why not let him sit behind the wheel and get his own impression with a what I call a heavy load, it's not quite the same if you aren't mashing the petal yourself.... we will see if he is interested and has the time..

I'm interested, I can make time. I always listen to people and like to see what they have done because you never know someone might have a better idea then myself or others.

I believe Leroy's is a Diamond Eye, he also has good prices. I'd go with him.

I actually have the ssd exh, Leroy was late to the game.:(

I have the flow through muffler, I think the Diamond Eye is the same, I can't see how they could be restrictive.

Figured out my no power problem. The injection pump was weak I think when I picked up the trailer. Then when I had a meet and greet with sctrailrider my truck was hard starting. Got the truck to start after a little bit. Thought it was the glow plug relay, then talking with Chris and having a meeting of the minds on IP's, I stopped at the hotel and went out 30 minutes later and no start. Dumped a bottle of water on the IP and truck fired right up. Ordered a new IP and replaced the IP when I got back to NY from SC and NC, and the truck is like day and night with the new IP. Has more power and runs great. Thanks to everyone for your help.

I do not know what Leroy sells. Myself, I am partial to stainless last forever exhausts - even though the catalytic converter and muffler on the Tahoe turned out to be trash - to light duty. I would also go with stainless clamps and hardware - even on an aluminized exhaust. I keep my vehicles forever and like the parts I buy to last that long.

The noise on long trips with a straight through muffler towing can wear you down. I wouldn't go without a muffler.

Are you running hot shot or 'making money' with the trailer? Again there is MPG to be found by replacing the GM turbo with just about ANYTHING else for towing.

I agree, that drone can get old. I go with the quiet mufflers, truck still sounds good but not nearly as much highway noise.

I turned my pump up on Friday and pulled the trailer with my 4 atv's today. It is a night and day difference on how it handles the power at freeway speed on hills. My EGT's only went 200 - 300 degrees higher on the same route I take with the same load. I should have done this years ago.

I was going to turn my IP up but now I have a reman I just put in I'm going to wait till next summer when the warranty is out. I tow my own stuff right now. I use to do hot shot but havent in 4-5 years. I want to get back into it one day. Miss it. I have a 3" exhaust straight piped, comes out just behind the cab. Yes it is loud but I needed a cheap exhaust. Now i'm looking at the 4" and figured running straight 4" out behind the rear axle would quite it down. But I'll go with the muffler. I dont want hearing aids when I'm 50 years old.

I have had near deaf 60 year olds complain about the noise after 650 miles in one day in the cab. :rolleyes5:
