My neighbor has a 1991 2500 ECLB 4WD 6.2 bone stock with 288K on it. The truck has been rock solid for many years and stone reliable starting without being plugged in ever since we fixed him up with a push button glow plug solenoid 2 winters ago.

He loves the ole 6.2 and drives it everyday even though he also owns a 1996 2500 with a 6.5TD.

Well this morning I was out watering the plants & he called me over to ask me about a recent issue that had developed with his 6.2. He said he was not sure what was wrong but it starting smoking to high heaven & was hard starting. I said OK well start it up & lets take a look see under the hood.

It's smoking like a mosquito fogger but worst yet, it's bubbling vapors out of the antifreeze overflow bottle...the exhaust smelled a tad sweet to me also. The oil did not look milky but it sure don't look promising with them vapors blowing out the cooling system.

At 288K it might be time to retire the ole boy, body is kinda rough also but not terrible. I kinda think pulling the heads might be alot like working on cast iron drain pipes in a house that's 100+ years old...like I said in the subject line "Sad Day" :(

Well, you can always go through the normal blown HG procedures. Its always sad to see one of the good reliable 6.2/6.5's go down. 288K is pretty good for any engine!

If its no other choice put the aluminum block sealer in it. Know a lotta folks had luck with it! Hey after a certain point what u got to lose?

the heads aren't that bad to pull on a 6.2 I had to do it with the exhaust manifold still attached. the only hard part is that they weigh a ton then. had the head gasket ever been done on it? when I blew mine I had no coolant mixing in the oil, it all got pushed out into the overflow. new gasket/bolts and no problems so far. that was a couple of years ago about 40K miles.

I'd pull them and see. the worst you'll hit is a cracked block. best case scenario you out a couple of gaskets.

Thanks for the suggestions & replies.

Not sure what he's gonna wanna do yet, knowing him, he might try to keep driving it. I warned him that at least put some stop leak in it if that was what his plan, we'll see. It's his dime.

Thanks again gents!

Here is what I found out...

Changed both head gaskets cleaned up the heads, says they found no cracks? Installed the heads with new radiator, never pulled the pump or moved it and reused the original injectors...

Now the motor will start up and idle fine, but when they rev it up to 1800rpms it starts knocking coughing and smoking to high heaven...

I'm thinking they may have over looked a crack or three somewhere on the heads or block, what you all think?

My original '93 IP went bad and had some of those symtoms. It would idle with a small amount of smoke (tho it had two spun rod bearings at the time) then when you'd bring the r's up steady it would spew out raw diesel smoke. Ckoking white diesel smoke.. Ug I can still smell it..

Then I bolted said IP to a 6.2 with a dead #5 hole (don't ask)- nasty bore and piston with a cracked cylinder. The smoke is raw diesel from the IP mentioned above. They act really funny when they take a dump.

Anything new here yet???

I will be coming your war Thanksgiving week from SC, I could bring my 6.2 motor to him if he wants it.... it's a drop in complete motor.

No not yet, I have not been able to go down there to give a look listen yet. I should see him today though and I will ask him if he is interested in having a spare drop in.

Shoot me a PM with a price and I'll see if we can strike a deal...

Update from today...took my injector pop tester along with my old injectors from my 6.5 and went down to test all the injectors today. 3 out of the 8 of his old injectors were pooping way early like at 1200ish psi with very poor spray patterns. My Old 6.5 Delphi injectors from my truck I had tested after I replaced them and I knew they all were good popping at 2000 psi. So I left them with my old injectors, they are gonna install them with new crush washers and return lines and we are gonna see how that works out...Keeping my fingers crossed that there are not any additional more serious issues, we'll see.

I'll post up the outcome after they get it back together, prolly sometime this week, they are gonna wait for the new washers and return limes before they button it back up and hit the go button again...
