Road Trip issues

I can't get the socket on the injector far enough to catch the nut part of the injector. It just won't clear the pipe coming out of the turbo. You see, this isn't a turbo set like we are accustomed to. It's just a little different. The Turbo is still side mounted but has a different set up. There just isn't enough room to get a socket orwrench in there. I can post some pix of it when I get home. I'm hoping not to take the dog house cover off again til I get home.

The smoke only occurs when I shut the engine down at all. If I only shut it down for a few minutes (like refueling) or some other quick stop it just misses and smokes for about a block or two if I can stand on it right away. If I let it sit for 30 min or so it has that ping/knock sound for the block or two that it takes to warm up and clear out. When I leave it overnight, it does about the same as a quick stop, missing and smoke for a short while. Anyway the miss/ping/knock goes away when I floor it for a block or two, notnwhen I let off the pedal.

I don't think there is air in the system or clogging in the fuel system, as it seems to be only affecting the #8 cylinder, as I am still getting the PO308 code about once a day while we are on the road.

Only 1200+/- miles to go.
 
Hoping for you and the wife make it back to Minnesota OK. Yeah I remember that layout looked just a little different when we had the doghouse off on the trip back from picking it up in Reno. Like the 92-95 airbox, but rotated 90* so it was more like a ram air from the radiator support inlet, and the different ducting on the intake post turbo. That trombone exhaust still gets me, think the installer was paid by the inches of pipe used?
 
Well here we are, 3750 in and another 475 to go. So far, I've only added 1 qt of oil to the engine and 3 pints of water to the cooling system. I have noticed harder than normal cold starts though. It seems like the glow plugs are going out one at a time. This morning was the worst. Although it was a little cooler today. I have one spare spare gp with and if I have troble tomorrow morning, I will switch that one with a bad one and hope it starts. Once it's warmed up, it starts right away. I'm still having the injector issue too,,, although with figuring out how to clear it quickly helps.

I also forgot to mention the big rock that got picked up by the big truck in the construction area that produced a softball sized bullseye in the driver's side windshield. Well, at least I have full glass coverage.
 
Dang, Jody! At least it didn't go through the windshield like that receiver hitch mount that fell out of an E-350 Ford as it passed me on I-70 between Columbia and Kansas City did as I was bringing the Burb back from North Carolina with the Camry on a toter. Evidently the idiot didn't have the hitch pin in, and it fell out, bounced once, and spinning on its long axis the ball came through the windshield between the wiper blades and the other end above the center air vent before it bounced up over the Burb and cleared the Camry, too. Busted glass ALL over the dash and interior, a two inch round hole and a 1x1x1 triangular hole in the windshield, 35* out and 260 miles left to drive home and five hours to sunset!
 
The total miles for the trip was 4225 on the motor home and another 750 on my car that I towed behind.
The issues that happened were:

1. The new Heath pmd heat sync kit failed after 1200 miles
2. #8 injector had issues. Probably a piece of dirt from the filter change prior to the trip.
3. A wheel bearing problem was averted by catching it early and having it repacked.
4. A golf ball size rock hit my windshield leaving a soft ball size bullseye in the glass. Did not come through.
5. 6 or 7 glowplugs failed one at a time as the trip progressed.
6. One of the rear dual wheel valve stem extensions came loose and was flopping around, but I caught it in time and wired it down as not to cause any problems down the road.


Overall, it was a good trip. It could have been a few days longer, but the SWMBO had to be back for work tomorrow. I don't had that problem anymore :)

It costs about .50 a mile to run this rig, not including repairs and/or parts required on the road. But, there is no need for a motels or restaurants.

I was lucky that none of the issues were bad enough to cause a whole lot of difficulty on the road. Just some unneeded stress and worry. The glowplug and injector issue ended up making it through to home. The last morning was warmer in Bismark, ND than it was in Butte, MT, so it started easier and I didn’t have to put in that “1” spare gp that I had with. And knowing the quirks of this engine, I came pretty much prepared. I had an extra pmd, gp, lift pump, fuel filters, extra fluids and most of the tools required to do most of the work needed. I only used 3 pints of oil and 3 pints of water. I figure that isn’t too bad. I haven’t totaled the fuel yet, but figure I got between 8-10 mpg. I know some places I got a lot worse. 26 mph WOT going up some mountain grades for several miles. I didn’t worry about the speed, I just kept an eye on the temp gauge and backed off the pedal as needed.

Some things to do before the next trip are:
Get that IC hooked up, get the water/meth system hooked up, new GPs, new injectors, gauges and have the tranny serviced. Not that the tranny had any issues, I just think I should get it done before there are any issues.
 
Good to see you got back, Jody... once you get the injectors right, you'll need a chip to help out in the HP department. That isn't bad mileage at all, for a rig that size!

You'll love it once you have it working the way you want it; everywhere you go, you have your own bed, your own food, the snacks are in the same cupboard and the beer is in the same fridge!
 
We averaged right at 10 mpg on the way back from Reno on I-80 towing your car on a toter on several legs between fuel stops. Not bad for the last week of February and that nasty ice patches in Wyoming, Jody. The beer does stay nice and cold in the fridge, the trick is to remember to shut the generator off after microwaving the frozen burritos for a snack, right Jody?:rof: It was what, 250 miles before I remembered that I had started the generator to nuke me a snack (breakfast) in the microwave???

No, I don't drive with my mouth open:hihi:. But seriously, there was a ton of fine sand-sized glass shards everywhere, mainly on the dash, the center console and in mine and my friend riding shotgun's laps. He was cat-napping when it hit, I think he shit his pants when that receiver hitch hit the windshield. I remember I shouted something right before it hit, I know I leaned over and ducked down by the driver's door just before impact. Thank goodness I was wearing my wrap around sunglasses, I was brushing glass shards out of my hair that night, just imagine if a bunch of those little shards had wound up in my eyes.
 
Does anybody know how to contact Bill at Heath? I've sent 3 of the message things on the "contact us" page on his website, with no response. I called one day also, only to be told Bill was busy and would return my call, that was last week. Now, I can imagine a person being busy, but the original message I sent was on 8/9/12. :???:
 
The UPS man delivered the replacement PMD kit from Heath, the other day. Now, to box up the bad one and ship it back in the prepaid box. :thumbsup:

Was that the one we used on the way back from Reno?
 
The one we used on the way back from Reno, was the one that I brought with on this trip as a spare and it worked flawlessly for the remaining 4000+ miles of the trip. The one that failed, was the one that I bought after we returned from Reno, to permanently mount and replace the spare that we used.

When I spoke to Heath, there was some mention of some wiring harness issues that had been a problem too. I don't know if that was my issue. There was no intermittent on/off/snakebite or anything like that. It was either on or off two times, which weren't in ideal locations. So, I relaced it with the tried and true spare and didn't have to bother with it again.
