Friend right down the street has a 95 EX cab 6.5 F Turbo truck. He, and I, would like to know the success rate of just installing new nozzles on an existing set of injectors on a DIY basis.

100%,, IF, after your done, swapping out tips,,you have the pop pressure's set to 2200psi. For this you either build your own pop tester,, or take them to a local diesel shop, and have them do it. The springs inside are sure to be worn some,, and weakened over time, so they will add a few shim's to get all 8 dialed into a 25psi +or- your goal, for a smooth even balanced fuel delivery.

Thanks Pruit, kinda what I told him, I think he is being cheap--I had mine rebuilt with new nozzles and balanced. I wanted to hear from someone else.

I'm sure he could,, but how would it run?,,, or last?,,, Tell you tightwad friend,, if it's worth doing,, it's worth doing right!

It doesn't look hard to do - I've not done it, but I know how it's done - however, I wouldn't do it myself as a rookie, without a safety net (ie: supervisor (aka Turbine Doc) to do quality control while I worked).

Injectors are one of the few things that can take out your engine if you screw 'em up... just sayin'

6.5 injectors cost what? 50-80 a piece maybe as opposed to 500-600 apiece for duramax injectors. my plan is to buy one or two a month and take a long week end to do glo plugs, injectors and whatever else the beast needs.

There is a guy around here that built a pop tester from an old bottle jack. ;) :hello::eek:ut:

Here is mine pop tester.

I used a a2 ton hydr. jack.
Make sure you have a passage in the piston and bottom so the fuel can flow to the top, you may have to center drill the piston.
Welded the piston to the outer housing, welded a thread piece on the top and fitted a T piece fot the manometer, and connection for the injector.
Silver solded a cone on the end of the pipe that fits to the injector(place the nut for the injector on the pipe first).
Ther was a rubberplug in the side of the jack, made threads and fitted a 90 degrees fitting, and connected it to a bottle to store the fuel in.

Done

how does it work?

Install the injector at the end of the tube

pump up the pressure like it was a regular jack, watch the manometer when it pops
note the value.

for leakage test you pump it close to the pop value and hold it for a while to chech for leakage at the tip, and return

Looking nice 3500GMC :) Do you have a one way valve on it to hold the pressure, been thinking of that.
Makes it easier to read the value.

Is it projects on the shop floor ?

No valve for the first trial run. Now that I have time to tinker, yeah I'll get a valve before the next set or squirts. I see you went with a liquid filled dial. That helps.

The complete engine on the floor was/is the original '93 212k 6.5 with spun 1&2 rod bearings.

Block and other stuff was the beginning of the '82 6.2 build. Now 11k later still chugging along great.

I built the pop tester just before the 6.2 build.

Nice to have something to do :)
Its great fun to create testing tools self, it becomes a on off and cheap to..
