I tried this and nothing happened. What could be the problem?

Do you have the little connector coming out of the loom below & between the under hood fuse box and fire wall?

If you put power to that wire, if your vehicle has that wire. The lift pump should run.

How are you powering the lift pump?

You can always make a long jumper and run the lift pump directly from the battery. I usually incorporate an inline fuse and toggle switch, if I do something like that
