Removed Body Moulding

pepp, that might be worth the 45 bucks. i did get into my clearcoat in a couple small spots because mine got too hot.

Mine came out perfect with the 3m so thats15 bucks saved...I also took off those dinosaur GMC 2500hd badges now the duramax diesel badges look a little out of place without them...

I'm detailing the truck for the next couple of days...will get some up when it's done...and my bumper and flares may be ready by Friday... :)

for the noobs out here, how exactly do you take of the badges? all i gather is some heavy fishing line, then im lost.

Ken

for those thinking of using the fishing line method...

Body shop guy showed me how to do it differently...he used a flexible plastic body filler spreader...slips right behind the badge and works fast and easy it also conforms to the contours for the side molding nicely...

Paul, will you be accepting appointments in the spring? :D Should look good when you all done.

ran into a few glitches.. see below...

I just borrowed a tool from my friends body/resto shop. Its an air tool like a nibbler, reciprocating I guess you could say. It has a flat putty knife-like blade that you put under the molding. I blew the moldings off a pair of doors in about 15 seconds. Only problem was it left all the 3m tape, which I have yet to be able to remove. I tried some of the Goo-Gone adhesive remover, paint stripper, putty knife, DA with 80 grit, weird plastic toothed wheel thing on a drill, tried everything but the sandblaster, nothing is effective. Called the shop and said they use their fingers or lacquer thinner. I don't think they understand, I am talking about four 1 inch wide, five foot long strips on a pair of 1988 doors, plus the strips from the stick on vent visors. I don't think the lacquer thinner will work if goo-gone didn't.
So anyway, thanks for bring up the eraser wheel thing, that looks like it might work for me. I'll go look for one this week.
BTW, in case it wasn't obvious, these doors will be getting painted so I'm not worried about saving the paint.

Lacquer thinner in a non diluted form will be more potent than goo gone. However, it'll also peel the paint quicker too since its stronger. You try the the 3M eraser wheel?? That thing works wonders on tape or glue.

I'll try the lacquer thinner then, until I can find an eraser wheel. Maybe it will work and I won't need an eraser wheel. Doors are getting repainted anyway, so I don't care about the paint but I don't want to take a grinder to them and then need to use bondo.
