Does anyone know of a competent trustworthy engine remanfacturer for a 4.8 vortex engine longblock for my 2000 gmc sierra?I don't want a used motor, prefer a reman as i plan to rebuild the original motor myself taking my time,so the reman would allow me to get the truck back on the road quickly.
All input and opinions appreciated.

Thanks

In all honesty I would just pick up a junk yard engine and drop in it. The LS VORTEC engines are some tough engines, and are known to run well past 250K miles before they need any engine work. Because of this they can be had for pretty cheap as not many fail. If your dead set on a rebuilt, avoid JASPER is the best advice I can give you. Look for a local remanufacturer that will let you come in and do a tour. Find a shop that does most all of the work in house so it's not being farmed out and the blame game that follows from farming out.

Check you Craigslist Ive seen good used pull outs for $350-450. Sometimes you can get them before they are pulled out so have a chance to hear it run...ect. 5.3 seem to be more available around here.
What part of Cali are you from?

Thanks for the replys,I'm from the high desert area by victorville. One of my main concerns with going to a 5.3 or larger,is the reluctor wheel on the crank.I looked on jegs and they have a new g.m.5.3 for less than $4000.00 but the engine information says cannot be used with active fuel management and does not give the reluctor wheel count. So i thought maybe switch out the camshaft with a stock 4.8 and if the reluctor wheel count is the same, this would be good with a brand new g.m. engine.Need to do more research to make sure the reluctor wheels are the same.
Thanks again

Yours is a 28 reluctor. I "think" up to 06 was 28. 07 & newer 58 but dont take my word, just stating what I think to be right.

The reluctor wheel is cast into the crankshaft, so swapping the cam wouldn't do you any good. I'm pretty sure they didn't make any radical changes until 06 when they started offering the AFM(drops from 8 to 4 cylinders) and went to the newer PCM's from the older LS PCM's. Good used LS engines can be had for CHEAP money, so I wouldn't go spending that kind of coin for a new engine when you can get a good used one that will run for another 100K+ miles for under $1K.

You want to get a used motor (4.8,5.3,6.0) from the same era as yours 99-06(early07). If you get one of those it will match up just fine.

I'll have to check out the local bone yards and see what they have, but thanks for the additional information on the reluctor wheel and advice.

Thanks,SMOKEY.

It looks like engines up till 05 used the 24 tooth reluctor wheel, and 06+ used the 58X. Starting in 05 some engines got rid of the reluctor ground into the camshaft, but this is easily overcome with a timing cover swap as many aftermarket cams don't have the reluctor so people have found you can swap to the later cover and an 05 CORVETTE cam gear and run the cam reluctor off the front. http://www.ls2.com/forums/showthread.php?834483-LS-Timing-Reluctor-Wheels-Explained
