Recommended Batteries

I know I will be buying DEKA lead acid when my DURACRAPS finally give out here soon. Every day it is starting slower and slower, so I doubt it will be much longer. I can't afford the cost of AGM's right now, and they don't make many in a group 75 battery anyways(I have to run a group 75 on the drivers side due to my swap).

Proud owner of two new DieHard Platinum P4 34/78 AGM batteries. They are a matched pair made in July 2013. The sale price wasn't in the stores so I got on my phone and ordered them online for pickup at the store I was in. They were $195.49 online and $229.99 in the store. I also entered "SEARS2013" and got an additional $5 off of the online price. $409.14 after tax online, then an additional $30 for core charges and $1.80 for environmental BS tax when I "picked them up." Since my old batteries aren't complete toast, I plan on keeping them and returning a couple junk batteries I find lying around. The manager there said it didn't matter what size I brought back for the core charge. I can use the old batteries to crank my MEP-003a generator and I'll keep them hooked up to a float charger while they wait for action.

Googlefu tells me the Duralast Platinums are Johnson Contols batteries. I'm going to just bite the bullet and get those DieHard Platinum P4's for $400.

You were absolutely correct. I was using the "Platinum" word too loosely. :) The Platinums are a lead acid type, whereas the Platinum P4's are AGM.

These are exactly the set that I have. Good luck with them and keep us updated. Platinum P4 AGM.

Running NAPA batteries upsized to 1000cc. Over a year old and still going. I have been using there batteries in the gassers for awhile with great success.

Got me to thinking... In the heat of he desert higher cranking amps kills long term battery life due to the plates being closer together and heat causes swelling, loss of acid. Even sealed batteries with more plates die sooner. Is it the opposite in cold country?

Will L. never heard of the desert heat causing an issue but then I do not live in a desert. I can see the heat causing issues. I have always gone with the biggest battery for both winter use and to help with anything else causing a drain.

Heat kills batteries. They never get to cool off and then you have extreme under hood temps from the AC nearly always on year round and high air temps. We get 2 years out of batteries here period. Between 2 and 3 years you are asking to walk. AGM's do give you that 3rd year. (Mainly because the cells will run under some pressure before venting.) Most flooded batteries get replaced under the free replacement 3 year warranty out here. Others simply buy new batteries at 2 years no mater what.

The OEM AC Delco batteries only made 9 months and 88K on my 2008 Duramax before cooking off the passenger side to doornail dead. Course you can boil washer fluid under the hood out here...

WW, have you tried fresh air intake to the batteries? We do it to all the fleets here and get 60%~70% more life. All your hiway miles I am sure it will help you.

A battery relocation to somewhere cooler would help as well. With the 1995 SUV you have a good idea for lack of space making relocation an issue.

Are these ok? Worth the coin or rebranded cheaper battery.
