I am in the process of the final stage of the tear-down of my engine. I have a 929 block but am not familiar with the reputation that this block has. I will be getting it magnafluxed to check for cracks, but I was wondering if this block is solid enough, reputation-wise, if it is crack-less, for a performance build?

Thanks,
CD

I'm currently in the middle of my engine build and found out today that my block is cracked, was told it was good a month and a half ago (NAPA apparently doesn't know how to magnaflux anymore? ) but my machine shop double checked it and they found the main web(s), not sure how many they just found the one and they gave me a call, were cracked.

So I am now in serious hurt for a block. Does anyone have a good block they are looking to part with or willing to part with?

Thanks,
CD

Really? So what you're saying is they sell just the block? And all our junk should just bolt on? Cuz if that's what your saying, I gotta get a load (work - drive tanker) down to GA and strap a block to the deck plate!!

My block was problem free. The block itself needed some rusty sludge flushed out of it, but after a while, it finally came out. The block has been nothing but fantastic for me. Headgaskets held 20psi just fine. Bottom end is solid. Is good enought to support 275rwhp as far as I know. I think I got lucky though on it. I do hear about some issues

did you get just a bare block or a long block?

Came with the heads. Everything else (manifolds, injectors, intake, thermostat crossover, etc ect) had to be swapped

I believe the bare blocks they would have are from engines that had bad cranks, pistons, water in them etc. which made them not sellable as a longblock. Might still be some good blocks but you might have to do some extra work on them. if yours came with heads etc it was a longblock or maybe a complete engine depending on how well dressed it was

After digging into it a little further, the block is only cracked 5/8" down on one of the main bolts. If there is no further damage, which the machine shop is going to finish magnafluxing the block to double check, I am considering doing a Full Torque thread repair insert, by Lock-N-Stitch, to save my block. Has anyone else done this type of repair? I know Heath put them in his salt flat racing engine, and he just told me today that the block is still going strong with about 3 inserts in it.

Just wondering if anyone else has done a similar repair?

Thanks,

thanks NVW, i should have done a search before asking, at work tho so i only had time for the short post.

Sounds like a unanimous YES though. Hopefully the rest of the block checks out, this fix could save me a bundle.

Yeah, I called Ted's today. Seems like bare blocks end up at the community college, well some. Didn't really mention more about bare blocks. Was more interested in talking about whole engines.

when I finally get around to building an engine I'm going to call them and see what a bare block runs. I don't want most of the rest as I plan on changing alot anyway, would def like a good foundation

Yeah.. I wasn't sure if the blocks they had were good usable cores, or if they would part with them or whatever... I just remember seeing a pile of them and who knows how many they may have now.
