Rear Ends - Educate Me

sky pager...sky pager....

Charlie Mack and he's the first out of the limo.

Didn't mean to date myself. ha ha ha...

You shoulda seen the cell phone I had back in the mid 80's. LOL

Back when I went to see AC/DC when we were both in our twentys. WOW I'M GETTING OLD.

Thanks for pointing that out.

You gents are gonna make me look under the Tahoe, not sure what that has other then the ratio is 3.42.

Oh & I like em small & round as history has repeated that they tend to grow with time ;)

The tahoe has a 10 bolt.

they tend to grenade real easily and after 20 mph if you lose traction they wont lock up again. not many offroaders or racers like them cause there more for the drive on the street crowd

Well I have one in the '99 AND I get some slight jumpiness when starting a turn from a full stop. Been busy with other things on the truck, hopefully now all addressed. Now I need to address the rear end, brakes, etc. My luck is this rear end goes bang on me. I've never worked on a rear end before, but there's always a first. Based on Colbythekid's experience with my former '95, I suspect that I'm also due for a rebuilt tranny soon or sometime between now (163K) and 200K miles.

G80 is what came on my 3500HD C&C, 15000 GVWR, and tow package......So there was an option for something better?

NO, not factory. The only thing that came with a detroit Locker(hence the name) factory to my knowledge is CUCV's M1008,1028. AFAIK even the M1009 had an open carrier. i have owned a few G80s and every one failed horribly.

M1009 came with the G80 in the rear - 10 bolt

Personally i have been very happy with the G80 in my 1009, and in my wifes burb... really wish my burb had it! Makes plowing suck with it compared to the ole trusty 1009....

Also, 1/2 ton 4x4 burbs had the semi floating rear, 3/4 had the full. Also to note, I think all the 3/4 burbs had the 3.5" wide shoes. I know our 99 (wifes) is as close to a 1 ton suburban as you could get....

Great!:nonod:......I saw today in the 12" of snow this morning, that the "G80" gave power to the RT side (Pass side) wheels (Dually) 95% of the time, spin, spin, spin....every now and then I would see the LT side wheel spinning (slowly).

It sure would of been nice to lock up both sides, as getting out of the parking spot in the snow made for a PITA experience!

I have blown apart many g80s. They will not take much abuse at all and when they blow the pieces fall into the spiders and self destrcut and the wheel , axle and all, fall off. No thanks. Been there , done that. The GM 10 bolts IMHO are the worst diff ever put in a 4x4 truck. A true GM FF 14 bolt with a Detriot Locker on the other hand is damn near indestructible. My old K30 had a 454 LS6 A 4spd (NP435 IIRC) and 44's and I beat the balls off it. It still to the day I sold it had the original 1974 GM14 bolt FF. I actually tore the transfer case (NP205) in half. The output shaft was laying on the ground still attached to the Driveshaft. Diff was fine.
I can't remember how many 10 and 12 bolts I blew up but I can tell you twice I lost the axle and wheel. No thanks. If I buy a 1/2, the first thjing I do is swap the axels. It's so easy to do on OBS. Not sure about NBS but Joey D had a nice setup.

A general statement that all c-clip style rear axles are junk is not fair at all. Any axle can be broke with enough abuse. I have put more than 500,000 miles on 10 and 12 bolt axles without one problem. The 10 bolt in my 82 olds 98 made it to 360,000 with no problems. It could still be going.
The gm limited slips are rather worthless. A open will do just as good.

I would say the 10.5"s G80 is pretty good, you can see what mine has through and still going strong. I can see though how if the carrier bearings got loose they would blow the case apart though.

C Clip=wheel and axle fall off the vehichle while moving....
Full floater=Wheel stays on
Ford 9inch(used in Ford 1/2 tons) Rear Blows=wheel stays on.
don't remember what Dodge used.
Nuff said...
I do agree that an open carrier is better than the g80(I never knew it by that name, we just called it posi traction). You have not lived until your wheel, axle and all pass you. On my 69 Blazer the wheel fell off axle and all about 800 ft from my house. I locked the huibs and dragged it home on it's ass. I didn't care what I did to the backing plate or housing cause the next day I ripped them both out and dropped in a 14 bolt and a Dana 44.

Is the wheels falling off with the axle a common problem?

I'll have to inspect mine closer, would the brake drum back and shoes stop the axle from sliding out?

No, not on a c clip. If the carrier blows apart the wheel can fall off. Granted, to be honest I had lifted trucks and 4 wheeled alot but just the fact that is can happen has made me very leery of them. Nothing hold the wheel, axle, brake drum except the c clip. IMHO that is way too much for a clip. There is groove in the spider gears that the c clip sits in and can't fall out unless the axle moves slightly inward. The center pin of the Carrier is supposed to prevent this but if the carrier(spiders) come apart, the clip falls off and the wheel et all come off. There is a picture of a red and white Blazer in my Photo album. That truck had a 454 with a 10 bolt , g80 and the carrier blew apart and the wheel and axle on that one walked out about 2 feet. I compltely lost it on my old 69 Blazer. Again I supposed if something is sstock and driven easy maybe it will never happen but plenty of guys I know as well as my self have lost a wheel. IMHO a 10 or 12 bolt is way to whimpy of a diff for a Truck not to mention the brakes are way to small besides.

The only thing to inspect is pull the cover off the diff and inspect the spiders etc. If they are very work or coming apart(chunks missing) that is bad. Also the G80 has a tendency to fall apart and the pieces get caught in the ring and pinion and all sorts of nsaty carnage. I am not sure what 1/2 NBS trucks have but I believe them to be the same. I know anything 1/2 from 91 K5 and 87 k1500 back to the late 60's had the c clips.

You'll also note the 91 Jimmy in my photo album(red and silver). It had a 10 bolt with the g80. It lasted about a month after I got it. Needless to say you can see from the pics 8 lug upgrade. The only way to fly.
