10 bolt vs 14 bolt? What bolts are we referring to?

Semi Floater vs Full Floater?

G80?

Locker?

Droopy vs tight?:hihi:

The number of bolts in the diff cover is the first one. Semi floater VS full floater refers to how the wheels and axles are supported. In a semi-floater the axle shaft has a single bearing that rides against the axle shaft and the housing and the axle supports the weight. In a full floater the weight of the vehicle is supported by a hub, and the axle bolts to the hub so that all of the weight is supported by the hub and the axle only transmits the power to it. Locker or open refers to the style of differential assembly it has in it. An open is also called a one wheeled wonder as the vehicles power is distributed through a set of spider gears to the axles, so if one tire comes off teh ground it will simply spin that one. A posi unit normally refers to a clutch style diff where it uses clutch packs behind the side gears in the spider gear assembly and most will have a preload spring to apply some pressure to the clutch packs to help them equally distribute the power to both wheels. And a locker like the G80 uses a flyweight type set-up that works like an open diff until one wheel loses traction. Then the flyweight will be driven and it will engage a ramp plate that will enage the cltches in the diff asesmbly. And then you have a detroit locker where it uses cogs basically to lock them together under power and unlock when there is no power to them.

As for droopy or tight, I think that one is personal preference(I just like em big and round).

There also is 14 bolt semi-floating. My 2500ld has that.
In case you wanted a expanation , A semi-floater only has 1 bearing on the outside. No big hub. Axle comes out by removing a "C" clip inside the differential. The axle actually carries the weight of the load.
A full floater has 2 bearings on the outside. To remove the axle just the 8 bolts have to be removed from the hub. The hub carries the load on a full floater ,not the axle. Heavy 3/4 and 1 tons use the full floater as does the K1500 suburbans with a 6.5. Not shure if a c1500 6.5 sub uses a full floater.
A locker is a type of posi-traction differential. Both wheels will spin with posi. Open differential will only spin one wheel.
The pic is of the hub of a 14 bolt full floater axle on my 94 k3500 srw

You can also go to pirate4x4 dot com and look at their 14 bolt bible for more pics and versions of the rear end.

Thanks for the pic, that's the hub we've got on the '95 and '99.

Your's is probbly more like this one on my 94 k2500HD.
The biggest difference between the 2 is that the 1 ton has 13"x 3 1/2" brakes. The 3/4 ton has 13" x 2 1/2 brakes. The 1 ton drum slips over the hub and wheel studs:thumbsup: The 3/4 ton has to have the wheel studs go through it from the back side and is behind the hub[pia to remove]
Sorry, for some reason the site won't take the pics I uploaded. It won't show me all i have either:???::mad2:

I've done the brakes on Colbythekid's '95 and IIRC the hub slid off the studs and it was rather easy to do.

Oh & I like em small & round as history has repeated that they tend to grow with time

After two kids and ten years, big and round is just as sweet as small and round.

I loved it small and I love it big just as long as I get to grab it I'm happy.:D

BTW she has no bolts and a full floater [atleast my hands float to it], and the truck 14 bolts and a semi floater.:hihi:

My knowledge of rear ends...

here is a prime example of a good rear end...

and...not a good rear end...

Here's the most important thing to know...1/2 or semi floaters=junk. Rear blows, the wheel comes off axles and all. Full Floater The diff can self destruct and the wheels stay on the truck and you can lock the hubs(wait no hubs on these) and make it home in 4wd . The only thing remotley good about semis is the brake jobs are eaiser but full floater is the way to go and those G80's are junk. You are better off with an open diff. Those things handgrenade very easily. If you want REAL traction, get a Detroit Locker. It's no fun coming home at 4am and having the wheel and axle fall off.....I will never own a c clip rear.
