Well all, i finally had the old fisher MM on for the past few days due to blowing snow. I got lazy and left it on and went to work. There is a hill on my way to work that is a pretty steep grade, i can only do about 30-35 at 2500 rpm up it. It is about two tenths of a mile long. I knew this would be the test to see if it was going to get over 210 like it used to before i replaced the engine. The temp just kept climbing as i went up the hill, and when i reached the top it was on the bar right before 210. I kept going accelerating and the temp was still going up slowly up untill almost 210 then it slowly crept back down. I am driving with the plow almost draggin on the ground, trying to get air to it. I have done tons of mods for cooling on this truck and it still runs warm with the plow on going up any hill. I am kinda dissapointed, i really dont care that i go up the hill at 30 or so, but i almost have to avoid hills when i have the plow on. Sucks!! One more questions is my tach says im idleing at like 450ish, it seems low to me. I see its supposed to idle at 560 or something like that, i changed the alternator so it showed it idleing at 800 before the engine swap. Maybe just to picky about it?

You say it almost (but not quite??) made it to 210 and then cooled down. Did the fan engage? Have you done the mod to the fan clutch?

I have a kennedy clutch, supposed to engage earlier than stock, it was almost 210, almost straight up and down. The fan clutch feels like it engages all the time, you can feel it pulling air at idle..

Really cant hear much at 25oo rpm, kinda loud with 4'' straight pipes..... Not to mention its been hovering around 0 so i the windows are frozen shut

You should hear it even at 2500 rpm. The first time mine engaged it scared the hell out of me.

I guess i havent noticed it, i never noticed the first fan one either. I will see what happens tomorrow on my way to the jobsite. I really need to get a GMTD scan...

So does mine. Your fan isn't engaging. Do the DIY Fan clutch mod... You hear, feel, and notice the difference instantly. I saw 217 on a scanner when my guage read 210.

I loosed the fan clutch coil about 1/4 inch was perfect for me with plow. 205 or so on, off at 195ish.

Also. When your temps are 210 with the plow on, your IAT's are probably well into the 200's... HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT. When the fan is working, they drop fast too, but until that fan engages, they skyrocket. Not good. Adjust that clutch ASAP.

once the clutch is working, you can just leave your plow high up instead of playing games driving all skitish because your plow is 1/2 " off the pavement skipping off of everything...

Been there, done that :)

I also attribute my valve failure last winter to the highway run with the plow on. Temps were 210 on gauge, I know they were alot higher, EGT's were about 1000, but I bet my IAT's were very close to defueling level. The extremem heat found a weakspot and a piece of my valve came out.

Thanks matt, i will look into this mod, im kinda dissapointed that this one isnt kicking on, i paid a crap load of money for it.

Problem is the plow itself disrupts airflow so much the heat from the radiator has a tough time getting to the clutch. By making a few adjustments you can find the sweet spot where it will kick on when hot, or plow loaded, but not during normal usage is key.

I went 1/8th and then went another 1/8th as it was kicking on before 210 on my dash, but was closer to 217 on the scanner, so i went another 1/8 inch, for 1/4 total works for me. I have a 2 year old OEM Dealership Clutch.

I read the thread on the mod. I will do it as soon as i can get some time and some heat. Been working insane hours along with finals this week, feel like im gone 7am-8pm all the time....

Ok, just did the mod. I went 1/8 of an inch on my fan. It feels like it is more locked in now then before i did the mod. Its about 5 degrees here plus a 15 or so degree wind chill. Bitter cold. But i finally got it off, just lost my 10mm socket somewhere in between the frame and steering box. I will put it back on tomorrow morning and head off to work with the plow on to test it. Cant wait...

your tack only reads down to 500 I believe, so it was lower than the lowest mark?

You can only go 30mph up the hill? Sounds like you need some more power, which might also aid in your cooling. Send me a PM if you want to try a chip I have.

Regarding your tach, see the pix in my photo album. Sounds like you got the small gasser pulley on your new alternator.

About two weeks after I replaced my alt I discovered the same thing....of course they had already sent my core back. I looked at every alternator for this truck that AZ had in stock (5 or 6 of em IIRC) and they all had the small pulley. Checked Advance and O'riely's and they all had small pulley's.

Went to a local (ma and pa) alternator/starter shop and he gladly swapped mine out for the correct size - no charge. A couple of weeks later I was in my shop and looking for something to do on my truck....HEY! , pull that pulley off and paint it and the cooling fin thing behind it some other color than black - and maybe the next time I'll remember to pull the pulley off and swap it BEFORE I leave the parts store.....I opted for Krylon True Blue. :D

Hey, buddy pointed out to me that the o mark on the tach is actually 500rpm, i thought it was zero. Thanks Tho! btw, i do have the correct pulley, i took it off another 6.5

Ok i did the fan clutch mod. I lengthened the coil by 1/8 of an inch. I can HEAR the fan when it kicks on now. It never engaged that much before. I havent taken it on the long hill yet, but on several trips with the plow on smaller hills i can watch the temp drop right down when the thermostat opens all the way. Def. a good mod for plow trucks!
