Questions about ACDelco vs Baldwin oil filters

I keep 10-12 oil filters on my shelf in the basement. I have come to the end of my current supply and I have been looking for a re-supply of said oil filters. While living in Evansville, IN I could simply run down to QADCO Auto Parts and pick up a case of PF2232 filters for about 9 bucks each. Now that I am in WV, AC Delco seems to be missing in action. So, my question is if I have to buy them online is the Baldwin a "good" substitute for the Delco part?

I see that the ACD PF2232 does NOT have an anti-drain back valve, nor a by pass valve, the Baldwin B1441 has both. How much does this matter, or does it? I have been using the PF2232 for about 10 years now and no issues, but should I have a filter with a anti-drain-back valve and a by-pass valve in my filters?

I used to use Baldwin almost exclusively. They always done well in independant testing.

Now I use mostly Amsoil Ea filters.

Baldwin also has different grades of filters for some applications. The local Baldwin dealer doesn't always carry the higher quality substitute or even seem to know about them.
If I have to order I just as well orde Amsoil

I've never used anything but the AC2232s but I wouldn't mind trying the AMsoil EAOs. They're known to be very good. If the anti drainback was needed, I'd think it would be in the ACs.

Do these different grade filters have the same part number, i.e. b1441? And how can you tell....price?

don't know what kind of oil you use but Advance Auto has a Mobil 1 sale for 5 qts Mobil 1 Diesel Truck full synthetic 5w40 and a Mobil 1 oil filter (M1-303) for 32.99... thats a great price and you end up building up inventory on filters... our Dmax take 10 qts so thats 2 filters with each ten qts.

I just stocked up and now have two spare filters...

I have used both the AC Delco and Baldwin filters. I like them both. The Baldwins seem very sturdy and are put together well. I am sure you will not have any problem with them.

That's a great deal.

Mobile 1 filters always test up towards the top. Wish I had an Advanced Auto nearby. Even though I'm pretty well stocked up right now.

I've been using Rotella 15w-40 since it was new, I tried the Rotella 5w-40 syn once but since it comes in gallon jugs it was too hard to find the one quart bottles regularly. Around here it is hit or miss on whether or not the auto stores carry the products all the time, especially WalMart. I don't know what the deal is in this town, but they don't seem to have the same oil on the shelf month to month. I know I'm exagerating but only slightly. I thought I was going to be able to go to longer drain intervals (5k to 7500 miles) on the Rotella, but I can't, it's a psychological thing I guess. So I don't know if I could even with the Mobil 1 stuff. Tough for me to spend double on oil if I can't go the extra miles. I know, crazy time.

It is just so hard to find the Delco parts here...well fact is I can't unless I spend 13 bucks! I usually go back to Evansville, once a month and I stock up there, but those prices are getting up there too. This is the first time I have ever considered moving away from the Delco filters. But, I saw the Baldwin b1441 filters online for $7.27 each for a case of 12 which seems like a really good deal, 2 bucks each cheaper than anything else I see, which is why I am asking about them.

As far as I'm concerned the anti-drainbacl is necessary in a horizontal application but not in a verticle. Though I did have a 2 quart verticle filter that would drain back somehow.

The different quality of Baldwin filters have different numbers. I don't know how much info is on Baldwin's website. You could also give Baldwin tech service a call.

You should have no problems at all using a 7500 mile oil change interval. To put your mind at ease, try doing a UOA on the oil when you reach 5000 miles, and wait and see what they have to say. I change my oil once per year. I do use a by pass oil filter though. I change my oil once per year, and have been receiving good results, with them saying it is OK to go further. But I change oil at once per year anyway, every June. I average about 14 to 15K miles per year. I have been using the Shell Rotella T Syn in the blue jugs with no problems at all.

You won't have any issues using the Baldwin filters either.

I run once a year in October with Amsoil 15W-40 and EaO filters. It works out to about 16k. I do need to start getting the oil analyzed, though...

That makes sense. I guess the weight of the oil in the upper engine while hot could push the oil in the filter out creating a syphon effect.

I will give Baldwin Tech Service a call and see what they say....thanks...

I know that in my head that I can go longer, but I've been too long doing this way. I think that you are right about the UOA easing my mind, but really there have been a ton of guys posting their UOA results with the Rotella 15w-40 and many are going as high as 10K miles.

I feel much better about the Baldwins and may try a case of them (12) which should last me years...I change oil twice maybe 3 times a year, but that is because I am still driving back and forth to Indiana (1100 miles round trip) every month. Once that stops I'll be back to once a year...maybe twice.

Thanks guys. I do hate moving away from the AC Delco filter, but it's just getting to hard to keep using it, and expensive. I am really trying to get out of the gotta do everything to the max mode, and start saving where I can without jeapordizing the reliabilty of the truck.

Any comments on the $7.27 per filter (Baldwin b1441 case) price? Good, bad, no big deal?

FWIW I have used Baldwins for years on Macks, Cat, Cummins, HE with no issues at all. Had good luck with thier fuel filters on my stubborn old Detriots too.

Baldwins on mine for years when I was running dino oil on my Amsoil bypass remote always got great lab samples with those filters, now that I'm running a sample program with syn oil and Amsoil syn I've shifted back to Amsoil as I'm running 15-20K change intervals now.
