found this on craigs list a while back and it just got reposted. he told me when i talked to him a while ago that it was an elctrical fire and that it pretty much just burned the top of the motor. what do you guys think would that have hurt the block for $50 it may be worth it just to try. hes got a lot of parts that i could use besides the block

I can't tell from the pics. I can tell you that it is a crap shoot. I bought a 400 Ford that was in an engine compartment fire to rebuild ..... had everything fluxed and it all checked out ........ rebuilt it and it lasted 6 months before I blew the block (kinda like Chris1500's engine block) in half.

another time my motor home had a carb fire and the 460 went into my truck with out a rebuild and is still being driven around vernonia Oregon to this day.

it all depends on how hot it got...... looks like it would be fine for a core or a rebuild.... but looks can be deceiving......... like a low down dirty deceiver.......

if thats a FF 14b in the back ..... go offer the guy whatever price for it and i will find a way to get it from you.

Very safe gamble at $50. If there was still anti-freeze in it,all the better. The rocker arm retaining buttons[plastic] should be replaced for shure. Could turn out to be a real bargain.

Look at the belt tensioner. 1220.666 °F is where aluminum melts. The flames exceeded this temperature long enough to melt these parts.

Is it worth the effort and parts cost to try it?

warwagon i hear what you are saying but from the pics the upper intake other alum parts arent melted and really if i could even get the whole truck for 800 to 1000. its either got a 4l80 wich im sure will sell, or a nv4500 which i could use.

anubis. im willing to bet that it is a ff14bolt and if i decide to buy the whole truck or even if i get just the motor i could get it for you.

i wont have any idea how hot it really got but there is still part of the plastic intake cover left not sure if the brake res was takin off or melted but it appears to be missing.
i think if the guy ever gets back to me im going to go take a look at it

Exira's about 30-35 miles from the family farm. I'm headed up there towards the end of the week. Could go take a lot at it with 'ya. Rolling up to Omaha before heading east on I-80 isn't that much out of my way.

Could prolly ask around to see if I know anybody that knows the seller. Exira's not that big a town. Contact the seller & get their name. A friend of mine does quite a bit of hired-man type farm work for a guy around Exira.

-ps Wouldn't a 1 ton pretty much have to be the 10.5, 14 bolt ff.

1 ton srw is a 10.5" 14 bolt . They are different from a heavy 3/4 ton 10.5 14 bolt. They would interchange. The 1 ton 4wd uses a rockwell transfer case also instead of the new process 241? I junked a 93 1 ton srw ex-cab 6.5 4l80e.

really a rockwell is it any better that the np241? i just thought about that earlier today darrin and i sent him an email and am waiting on a response when are you heading that way could meet you up there are if its worth it maybe get you to pull her home for me dont really trust my 88 to make the trip its giving me hell. just got to keep her goin till i get the diesel back together.

Now that's a great offer!! Way to go!

as long as it's 10.5......... I am sure i have the smaller 9.5" (or was it 9.75") 14 bolt........

yeah I'd say score the whole thing ..... I just priced that T-case on car-parts.com and the rear axle ..... both came out to $1500 in good shape and as low as $500 for basically rebuildable cores..... around here that NV4500 (for the Chevy.... dodge not so popular) goes for around a grand for a decent used one.

By no means am I a mechanic. But, it appears there's at least one rubber hose still there - below the T-stat housing. How hot could it have gotten down low if that rubber is still there?

Gotta love small town/rural connections. My friend from that area is pretty sure he knows somebody that was actually camping next to that truck at a local lake when the fire happened.

How are they different?

Wish that truck was closer, I need lots of parts.
The brakes were configured different and the axle tubes may be bigger. I've got one of each sitting on a cart in my barn. They are not identical. Pics tomorrow. The transfer case is a borg-warner not rockwell:nonod:. It is huge compaired to the new process. It weighs at least double if not more. It has provisions for a pto on it.

IIRC my TC is a np241
The 95 gm service manual shows 2 different borg-warner transfer cases as well as the np241. Perhaps the hd transfer case was optional. I think the cab from the junked truck is still here. I can run a vin decoder on it if it is.
