popping alternators like candy

I did mess with the battery cables when troubleshooting everything... disconnected batterys while running to test alt when i didnt have my meter...

----------------

I don't think its safe to do this with modern alternators. I think you could with a generator with external voltage regulator. But not the newer stuff. When you disconnect it all of a sudden it senses 0 volts and goes to max output and the surge can take out the diodes I think is what happens. Or the excitation voltage surges. Anyway I was told don't do it anymore as it can kill the alternator.

Ya ive heard the same but ive never had an issue on any vehicle even the newest... 82 is hardly modern though ;)

That wasnt my probly here though cause i killed this alternator without doing that... lol

Rebuild your old alternator. Likely it just needs brushes. A local electrical shop can do this. But that year is stupid simple to do yourself.

The low quality parts store is just that - get used to changing them out.

Check for shorts on the charge and battery wires. Loose cables will kill an alternator. You will need diodes, diode trio and regulator as well as checking the stator and rotor for shorts. Bearings if they are bad only.

Do not disconnect batteries with engine running as the results are unpredictable and other electrical can go pop with high voltages.
