Plasti-Dip entire truck?

My good friend has a new 2.6 pulling truck in the works that needs the new hood painted and the flares, etc..

He's considering plasti-dip because it seems cheaper than paint and you can change colors. He's not really happy about having the door jams, under the hood, etc showing the original color but..

I've seen a lot of YouTube videos and people really praising it for durability, etc.. but anyone here know anyone that's used it?

I looks like we'd be spending around $600 bucks for the kit and enough to coat it (CC, LB). Paint is looking around $1500 - 2000 grand (just for the few parts).
 
truck bed liner? It will take a beating and should be as cheap. I did the roof of my truck because of the cheapness. It still looks good.

I will add I have not done the plasti-dip. Maybe I should test it out on the hood of my truck. It needs paint, badly!
 
Wow, looks like real paint.

No comparison to a bed liner. I had no clue it could look this good.
 
Yes, it's very nice (at least from the video). Here is a video showing mud wipes right off, no staining.

 
I wonder how that stuff would work on 4 wheeler plastic. The red clay down here stains white badly.

I think really well. If mine wasn't Camo I would do it. You can buy it in spray cans at lowes or Walmart. But limited colors.
 
I'm starting to do it outta my house now.

I got the DYC Gun setup that is made for spraying Dip.

Out of the Gun comes out ALOT better than using aerosol. They sell it in ready to spray Gallons now, already thinned and all.

Go on DipYourCar.com and see if they have an authorized Installed in your area. You want someone that KNOWS what they are doing to Dip your Vehicle. If you don't do it right, you'll have Tiger Stripes, and if you don't layer it properly / thick enough, you'll never get it to Peel like it should.

No, it's not hard at all.

I started out with Aerosol and then went to the Gun. With Aerosol, the final / dried product has a little bit of texture to it. NOT like Bedliner at all, but it's not 100% smooth. Out of the Gun however, it dries VERY nice & flat, like Paint.

Either way you go, don't worry how it looks when it's still fresh / wet. It's gonna look like ass, VERY Wavy, but as it dries, it settles and tightens up. That's when you get the smooth finish.

If you know how to paint with aerosol, it'll come out fine. But then you get these people that say "how hard can it be" and they clearly don't know what they're doing.

Just do a 50% overlap, keep the distance from the surface to Can / Gun the same and you'll be good. Don't try to get it all done in 1 coat either.

The nice thing is if you mess up, just wait for it to dry, and you can peel it off like a big Sticker. Just make sure it's thick enough and it'll Peel REALLY easy.
 
I never did anything with it, yet. I did buy a can of red to experiment with on my old faded hood. I do plan on doing a complete S10 when its up and running again.
 
Chameleons and Pearls are crazy with Plasti Dip.

That Silver is nice. It allllmost turns White, then it starts to darken up again, almost has a little bit of a Chrome look to it.

You can use other Electric Guns, but you'll get variances in how the Dip sprays, due to Heat Buildup from the Motor in the Gun. The DYC Gun was specifically made for spraying Dip, with a special Needle, Tip, and everything. It has 3 patterns you can Spray, either a Wide Vertical Fan, Wide Horizontal Fan, or a Spot. You can also Adjust how much Dip it sprays, from a light Mist to a real Heavy Spray. I have mine set at about 80%
 
I've seen the dip getting peeled off, If you like it, how long does it stay good, and how easy is it to scratch?

Awesome, a friend of mine is going to do his Honda Rincon ATV white (it's green right now). If we're decent at it, we're both going to color match our bumpers on our trucks.

His is a '11 Cummins (white). We're thinking 3 gallons for his ATV and front bumper and a gallon of glossy.
