Peninsular high flow water pump

I've been thinking about upgrading my cooling and I figure it would cost less to buy this pump than to upgrade to a serpentine belt system and buy the 2000 model HO water pump. Anyone on here running one of these? If so how is it working for you? Doing the serpentine belt conversion might gain me a few hp, but there is something to be said about keeping it simple. Another question for those in the know: is there a better fan that I could run on this pump?
 
If you have the OBS (1980's) you really don't have the cooling issues that the reverse rotation water pump and aerodynamic no airflow through the radiator issues the NBS has (1990's). Likely for cooling issues on the OBS you have a worn out fan clutch that is over 5 years old and crud built up in and on the outside of the radiator.

You turbo'd or other hot rod setup? What you cooking with under the hood?
 
I'm just gathering info for my future build. Right now I'm mostly trying to get it to stop pissing oil all over the place. I just recently replaced the radiator and finally have no cooling issues (though I still want to replace the fan clutch). I haven't tested it on any big hills yet though. It's a 1990 V1500 burb, non turbo for now. I was just under the impression that the stock water pump wasn't up to snuff but apparently that's mostly just with the new body style?

If you have to change the water pump - price it out. Won't hurt to have a HO pump, but, IMO it isn't needed on the OBS with NA. The HP was lower and thus the heat output didn't really benefit from it until you get turbo'd.
 
Good to know, so it's not a concern until I turbo it then. I'm planning on getting a banks kit in about a year or so. Still debating on whether I want to piece one together or buy a new one.
A new one would be nice, but it just depends on how my wallet feels in a year. I don't mind putting money into the truck as I'm planning on having it for a long time. Trying to do things right the first time.

Leroy diesel, a vendor on here, can get the Banks manifold, then you drop a good turbo on it (aka not a GMx or Sidewinder) like a HX40II or A Team Turbo, used 6.5 intake... This can be done for less than the Banks kit.

Change or machine out the precups, head studs... How far down the rabbit hole you going?

Keep in mind MPG vs. power. You got the best MPG now. Turbo's will get it out of it's own way but cost as much as 25% of your MPG with the GMx. This is one reason the other turbo's are now popular.
 
I want to go at least that far down the rabbit hole :p

I realise that mileage may suffer a bit, but being in Utah it's already down because of the altitude. I'd like to be able to go up hills faster than loaded semis. I drive out to MN at least once a year and getting over the mountains is a painful, smoke-filled experience.

You are 100% correct in needing a turbo for that use. Smaller ones work well with the 6.2 NA precups. Otherwise you will need bigger precups put in to clear the smoke from a larger turbo. Course we are talking a 6.5 DB2 injection pump to replace that small 6.2 pump turned up all the way...

Lots of things to look at in planning your build.
 
Unfortunately my truck just ate another starter bolt, this time with the bracket on. When I bought it it had no bracket, and I didn't know this until it snapped a bolt. This time it shouldn't have happened, I think I may have reused one of the bolts, which may have been weakened already. I'll never do that again :(.
 
How well does this engine start? Do you have to spin it with the engine firing a couple times but not starting?
 
It actually starts pretty quickly now; however, I had to crank it quite a bit during the winter to get it started until I went through and replaced the whole glow plug system.

Well, got the snapped bolt drilled out. The guys at the shop ordered some better bolts for me from the dealer, apparently this was a big issue back in the day and these bolts helped fix the issue. Hopefully they'll do the trick. At any rate, I rented a car for the week so I can get my oil cooler lines rebuilt and reseal the valve covers to hopefully take care of some of the oil leakage going on under the hood.
 
Turbo will only help mpg, if it goes down, get off the loud pedal. My city stayed the same and highway/hills/towing went up 4 mpg plus its more relaxing to drive. I have a 6.5 pump turned up and I get a light hazing, no rolling coal with the stock 84 heads and precups.
 
x2 on better mpg if you can keep your foot out of it. I added a gm 6 with homemade tm, turned up the db2 1/2 turn. I have the same city driving mpg- but I accelerate a lot faster now. Always foot to the floor until up to speed. kinda obvious if I would accelerate as slowly as I used to I would burn less fuel. Just can't bring myself to prove it yet :hihi:

The HO water pump ?? are these made for the V belt drive systems ???

The normal HO pumps are for the serp drives and turn backwards as compared to the V belt systems

Its a high flow v-belt water pump for the old 6.2's. I bought one several years ago for a 6.2 sevice truck I use to own. Don't quote me on this, but if I recall its rated at 110 gph, which is a little less than the 130 gph of the HO pump, but is a big improvement over the OE pump. It made a difference on mine.

I put one on my 1983 6.2 powered motorhome, made a big difference, I no longer have to watch the temperature gauge like a hawk. Made a bigger difference than having the radiator recored.
 
@AVM62Diesel, since you drug up an old thread, the un-written rule is you have to post pics of the motorhome! :)

Is it a pickup body or a G series van body?

I actually found a 6.2L powered pickup cabbed motorhome for sale, but considering there were raccoons in the bathroom, I decided it would be a money pit. ;)
