Pathetic Towing performance...

Are all the HX40 compressor housings 4" inlet? The CKO ones seem to be 3" but I didn't know if Holset ever made one that way or not. I'd swap the battery and airbox for a better setup then do a 4" intake, but that takes time I just don't have right now!

dodge had a 3" inlet for there hx40 hybrid. i remember having to swap a few out for broken shafts. there hx40 hybrid used mostly a hx35 turbo with the hx40 compressor.

They should all be 4". I have had a dozen HX35's in my possession and they were all 4", same with the half dozen HX40's. I think some of the older Holsets, IE H1's could be 3".

For all you guys talking about a drum brake setup. I have one for a 2wd 4l80e that came off a chevy 4500. I have the tail housing, drum, and driveshaft yolk for it.

Looks like the backing plate and misc other parts are MIA? The output shaft in that transmission is specific to that tail housing. Do you still have it? Also that trans should have the rare and desirable 'straight cut' planetary set. Hella strong at the expense of a little whine in 1st gear. If it's been rebuilt, they are probably gone.

I don't think they ever used the 4L80 in a 4500. Are you sure it wasn't in a 3500HD?

I bought the tranny off a guy to replace my suburban tranny. It's been over a year ago but I'm pretty sure he said it was in a 4500. Everything was in it when I bought the transmission. I pulled it all bc I was going to swap tail housings and output shafts bc my suburban is 4wd. Instead I just swapped the input shafts bc the clutches that were burnt up in my tranny were on the input shaft. The brake shoes were even still on the tail housing but were junk so I threw them out.

Output shaft is the same as any 2wd tranny I believe. I might still have the tranny it was on somewhere.

The only thing it is missing are the shoes and hardware. Shoes attach to the plate on the rear of the tail housing and the drum mounts to the yolk.

The yolk should slide all the way in so that the drum actually sits over the tail housing, but it has surface rust on it and won't slide into the bearing.

The output shaft is unique to the HD trans. It's close to a 4x4 shaft but not the same. My 95 has a solid backing plate on it that's different than yours so they may have changed it over the years. I'm pretty sure the guy you got it from was confused. I think all the 4500s would have had an allison. To be fair the 3500HD is the older equivelent of a 4500.

This output shaft was longer than my 4x4 output shaft. I guess I assumed it was the same as all 2wd output shafts. Never had a 2wd 4l80e or worked on one besides this one to be honest.

It would have made sense for GM to use the 4WD shaft and make the brake assembly work with that, but for some reason they didn't. That's the kind of thing I expect from ferd...
