P0087 Low Rail Pressure Code

Had to stop for an idiot woman this AM that pulled out on the highway almost right in front of me (I was doing 60) then waited for oncoming traffic to make a left turn 1/4 mi down the road :mad2:. PO'd me so I stuffed it and threw a P0087 and the truck stumbled some in 3rd/4th. Got to a stop sign another 3 miles up and it had a helluva time getting to speed. Acting like it was limping then finally it sputtered a bit and cleared up. I stopped, read and cleared (2) P0087 codes. I didn't take time to read the event data. Ran ok the next 25 miles even with me partly getting on it a couple of times. Fuel filter has 12k+ on it. Guess I'll change it tonight and see if that was it. I suspect it was.

Suprised you don't have a pusher pump. Or any in-the-know Dmax driver for that matter..
 
Believe it or not... That's the 1st time I ever stood on it from a dead stop without lifting in 4th and without spooling 1st. I was pissed... Lift pump? WTH would little old me need a lift pump? :dunno:

Crawl underneath and make sure your fuel line isn't collapsed up where it passes by the trans at the bellhousing. This is a BIG problem on LBZ's is the line collapsing in that area. A lift pump DOES help prevent the P0087 code and fuel lines collapsing.
 
Didn't see anything resembling a collapsed fuel line. Looks like there's a ton of room there so I'm not too sure where, specifically I should be looking. Truck drove fine all the way home but I didn't hammer it either. I do recall last time I changed the fuel filter after 12k miles that it was like I added 50HP. We'll se what tomorrow brings. Changed the filter this eve and checked differentials since I drove through some serious floodwater last week.
 
Possible air leak from cracked housing or a Wix fuel filter leaking around the WIF sensor.

After you limp it it takes a key cycle or code reset to get power back. (I forget.)

You got to make a habit of hammering it. This way weak parts will show up when you expect it not when you really need it.
 
I remember when my 06 did that... getting on the highway from a ramp that went up an overpass. :mad2:

It smoked like a freight train and wouldn't shift unless you let off the throttle. That big WIX prefilter I had was clogged and had a bunch of miles on it.

Next time that happens Mike, pull off the road and check the fuel prime pump on top of the fuel filter and see if it is hard. Maybe you lost a little prime there? Just a suggestion, as I hope it does not happen again.
Just for the record, a while ago I put on 2 Kennedy lift pumps on my homemade fuel filter setup. And I switched out the OEM fuel filter setup and went with the Nicktane spin on setups front and back. The lift pumps and spin on filters make fuel filter changes much easier. ;) And the truck runs well too. :D

Got other stuff to spend $ on if I can avoid it. I'm gonna cut the can off and take a look in the next few days. Next time I'm rained into the shop. Night and day difference in performance today.
 
Spend the money and put a single KENNEDY pump on it. Then it won't fall on it's face when the filter gets a little bit of buildup in it.
 
Is it true the OE style (and location) filters are quite 'tight' anyway? Like 10 or 12 micron or something?

Would a Kennedy pump benefit/like a coarser 'pre-filter' of, say 4 or 5 micron?
 
Nice Mike. Glad to hear that the filter took care of the issue. Maybe change at 7500 or 10K miles next time to avoid any potential issues?
The newer filters are probably catching a little more than the older filters did, thus the "clogging" if you will. I run the CAT spin-ons with the tall can in the rear, and the smaller can in the front. Both of which are 2 micron filters. But I think the lift pumps force the fuel through so you don't get the low fuel rail issues.
 
Update. Got a bit too frisky this morning and threw a code twice. Event data says 52 mph and 93% throttle position at just under 3000 rpm on one of them.
Suggestions for lift pump installation now being solicited.

If you want extra filtration go airdog.

I tow with my thumb on the code clear button. I need a lift pump too.
