is there any way to fool the OS on the DS4? i am having an issue with my fuel mix. anything over 50% makes it run bad. had to add 15 gallons of dino this morn and it even died once. just want to know if there is a way to bypass/fool it so it thinks the fuel is clear.

The computer relies on the fine positioning from the optical sensor for timing adjustments.

Mechanical IP is what you need. Until someone can develop a mod that uses some other type of sensor.

alright. thanx for the responses. i was hoping there was a secret that needed to be told. don't want to convert because i will be getting rid of it as soon as i figure out the troubles with the trans on the 93.

I tried to develop such a devise. I was going to run a remote mounted optic sensor on the oil pump drive. Problem is making it comunicate with the IP mounted OS.

I've been wondering about this too.
What kind of signal does the OS put out?
Is it a variable voltage or variable current?
Does it give a higher level output with clear fuel than it does with darker fuel?

I'm thinking that if it does output a higher level signal (more voltage or more current) with clearer fuel, then a simple amplifier circuit could be designed to amplify the output signal of the OS gives with darker fuels to match the output the levels that it will give with clear fuel.

Of course if the fuel is SO dark that the OS puts out little or no signal then that wouldn't work. I'm thinking mostly of running darker home brewed bio diesel rather than WMO...

after reading this, I am wondering, where did deejaaa go? judging by the 12-21-12 signature line and the gask mask picture, I hope he isnt in a cave somewhere.

i check in from time to time. been driving the TDI Jetta every day for a year now and both of the trucks just sit in the driveway. the 96 runs but needs cosmetics and will be sold. the 93 has issues with IP and will be the next project fix. it will be the truck when i need to haul.

BTW, gas mask is not me, just some rebel in Africa.

the optic sensor needs to see thru the fuel to see something similar to a speed sensor wheel.

Yah, I did a little more research and I think I understand how it works now. If what I read is correct, it is a photo emitter / reciever pair with a slotted disk between them. As the pump rotates, the disk rotates and as the slots pass between the emitter and receiver, light passing through the disk from the emitter is picked up by the reciever - giving a binary output pulse (repeating on/off) signal from the reciever. The faster the engine, and correspondingly the pump and the slotted disk, rotates the faster the output pulses.

Where the problem comes in is that the whole thing, emitter, receiver, AND disk is submersed in fuel inside the IP. If the fuel is clear (or relatively so) the light pulse shines right through the fuel and is received by the emitter, triggering an output pulse. If the fuel is too opague not enough light gets through to trigger the output reciever.

The big question is this; If the fuel is too dark, is it a case of the reciever doesn't recieve ANY signal, and therefore it doesn't trigger an output signal, or does it recieve a WEAK output signal that isn't strong enough for the system to read it as a pulse? If it is a case of a weak signal, then amplifying that output signal would work.

If it is a case of NO signal reaching the reciever then amplification of the output signal from the emitter isn't the answer. On the other hand boosting the light output of the emitter - to make it give stronger light output that will shine through darker fuel - might be the answer...

Anybody have a used (but good) optic sensor that they would like to donate for R&D purposes?

Yes, with a hitch. I have a good ds4 including pmd from a donor engine. Here is the hitch- Due to non disclosure/contract me no shipy shipy. Someone has to pick it up from me and take it home. Once you have it it's all good. I live 15 minutes from Vegas, anyone around these parts?

What if UPS showed up at your door with a box and a pre-paid shipping label? I have a UPS account and could make that happen easily enough. Technically, you wouldn't be shipping it - I would...

No can do. Does anyone have a friend or relatives in vegas. Maybe somebody popping in for vacation?

Kinda y I hate to mention- it gets annoying but gets the bills paid.

Check Ebay for seller arppop, he is always selling used PMD's on ebay. I recently put an Optic Sensor in after mine crapped out. I recently contacted him for
another one (spare). He says he no longer list them, because for 10$ it aint worth the listing fees... but he still sells them.

when you say "WVO" are you saying straight veggie fry oil? I'm using WVO to make BioD and running that straight and I haven't had a single problem.

Understood, hopefully we can find someone who can pick it up. I can send a box with a prepaid label to whoever is willing and able to pick it up from you, box it up, and drop it off at a UPS store.

That's good info - a source for good CHEAP used PMDs is always a good thing to have. Unfortunately it doesn't solve our problem. I don't need just a PMD. I need a working optical sensor - preferably attached to a pump (working or not). That way I can sit on my electronics bench to do some signal analysis on the input and output of the optical sensor with my o-scope to see if I can design a simple circuit to modify the optical sensor output and get the same signal with dark fuel that it woud normally put out with clear fuel. The object of the game being to be able to fool the ECM into running normally with darker fuels...

so can you do the same UPS thing you wanted to do with Will?

You bet. I can ship you (or your brother) the box and form-fitting foam packing material from a mechanical DB2 pump I bought for my Ford with a pre-paid return shipping label. The DS4 pump should snuggle right into the foam packing and box just like the DB2 did.

All I need is an address and the approximate weight of the pump.
