One Wheel Peels are Getting Old

Just wanted to get some information on how difficult it is to rebuild the Posi unit in my truck. All it does is 1 wheel peels, which sucks with the plow on. And most of all last Sunday I was pulling away from a stop sign on wet roads and the one wheel was just spinning away. Could not get moving for the life of me. Am also looking into doing some truck pulls this summer. I want to get it fixed, and ive heard this is expensive. Is there any rebuild kits? Does anyone know of a walk through video/thread or something. Thanks! 14 Bolt full floater with 3.42 gears.

There are known to have problems with the governor etc. There are better units out there to replace yours with although the cheapest road would be to patch yours. Recall you need to load the G80 before it will lock - by a touch of the brakes while spinning for example.

It seemed to work medicore when i bought the truck. I could plow in 2-wheel like nothing, but not anymore. I was looking over the net and was thinking about a detroit, but i heard you cant tow with a locker like that? The truck would be useless to me then. Looks like i either need a new G80, or find someway to rebuild mine...

You may be best to just go to a junk yard and buy a whole rear-end and replace yours. Probably cheaper than a rebuild of what you have. You will probably find a stronger better built rear end than what you have now. JM2C

Ive narrowed it down to a used g80 for 200, new around 400. Then a detroit is about 600 and change. Dont really want to replace the whole rear end since ive put so much money in brakes and seals into this one. Plus its a very hard axle to find with 3.42 gears. I see where your coming from. I just replaced a whole rear in my mustang to change to 3.73, was easiest way, but i dont think it would be that easy with a 14 bolt.

If you want it to lock and don't mind some wheel chirp while turning get a detroit tru track, I have heard good things about those. It is gonna cost a good amount of money for a new posi but your rear axle is plenty strong and a 3.42 full floater with posi will be hard to find.

Agreed. I did not realize that you had that much into it already. And the gears are definitely tough to find.

Yeah, i just redid all rear brakes, lines and seals, the only thing that looked good enough to save was the wheel bearings. And of course everyone snatches up a 14 bolt when its for sale. They are prized by many. Sucks the detroit costs so much, i wouldnt mind chirping at all. Have to read more about it. Just want to make sure its ok to tow with it. SOmewhere i heard it wasnt good to tow with a locker...

When you hit ice even the G80 or open diff can have the rear end loose traction. Under power it likes to go sideways on you. With a trailer that can get exciting. Snow melt that has frozen across a otherwise dry road is the perfect trap and example.

The G80 prevents lockup after a specific speed. So if you hit ice one wheel will spin while the other keeps you straight. In theory anyway. Posi or Detroit lockers will always try and break both wheels loose under these conditions and cause rear end power skids. The higher power levels needed when towing a trailer cause low traction conditions to slip a wheel easier.

Posi will chatter/grind and squeak tires in a corner. Detroit's click in corners. The G80 never locks in when you need the damn thing.

I am 90% sure you can tow with a detroit true trac. I know of people that have been towing and so far have not ill effects, it is a posi not a fully locked set up. Some people say they get wheel chirp but I rode in a truck with one and it didn't have any wheel chirp.

I wouldn't tow with a fully locked rear.

I barely remember it working when i bought the truck. Now it wont do anything.. Sucks.. Does anyone know of a writeup on this? I looked quick but didnt find anything..

You get much more tire wear from a true posi-traction rear end. A good limited slip or a G80 is probably the best for towing, or an ARB Air locker.

my Ford has lockers front and rear. I was towing my TT home when I lost a rear ujoint, I thought no biggie I'll just drive home on the front. WOW was I glad I was close to home, I couldn't hardly keep it on the road. under power it pulled one way off of the power it pulled the other way. WW is right about the sliding sideways with the locker I grew up on icy roads it didn't bother me

The experience I had a year & 4 months ago of towing 15k or so on 25 miles of icy roads is all the G80 on ice I'll need for the rest of my days. That thing got me wagging the dog and it took me about 1 1/2 - 2 miles to catch up to it. That happened 4 times. I was pretty sure I was gonna wreck my truck, trailer, and tractor all at the same time.

have you considered the eaton e-locker? open diff untill you flick a switch, then fully locked. I dont know anyone with one, but if I had money to burn, I would buy one.

so you guys that have played with more ice than I have, does a locker or posi make ice driving worse? would you prefer open differential in that situation? If so, that is why I would lean towards an e-locker or an ARB air locker, full operator control.

I have personally had no experience with lockers on ice, but I have talked to some who have personally experienced ice and lockers. A locked diff on a slippery surface will tend to want to overpower the steering wheels, keeping you going straight ahead when you really want to turn. This is where a selectable locker would shine.
