Old Wives Tale Part II....reverse rotation

I accidentally started a Cat 130G grader backwards. It stalled, drifted backwards and when I let off the clutch the motor turned over and started belching black smoke out the air filter. I thought the motor blew- it sounded like it was going to!

Distributor is still dead on, ATDC maybe, for a gasser. Just no fuel from the carb in reverse.

Damn this must be a real diesel forum!

Funny you mention that. Friend of mine asked me for advice about a ticking noise his car was making. I diagnosed and told him what I though the problem was. A few weeks later his car has the same problem. I asked him If he saw a mechanic yet and he said yeah. The guy told him what I said was only on diesels:mad2::eek:):h:D

Go figure:rolleyes5:

In the early 80's I drove water trucks out in the Oklahoma oil fields, they were Mack 300's, we never used the clutch to shift and sometimes didn't use it to take off if empty. One night a friend of mine tried taking off loaded with 6300 gallons of saltwater without the clutch and when the truck lunged he pushed in the clutch and that one ran backwards. I was sitting on the passenger side and he didn't know what was going on but I could see the smoke coming out of the breather. Shut it off and restarted and things were good.

Once they start backwards the oil pump also runs backwards and does not oil the engine.

I had this happen on a 3406 A model Cat in an 84 Pete 359 once. Let the clutch out a little quick and killed it and it sort of caught and run backwards. Sounded different and had zero Oil pressure.

OHHHH My turned it off right quick then restarted it with the starter, No more issues.

Had to talk high and low to find anyone who had seen a Cat do this.

Just part of the way these beasts are.
