Okay, am I screwed, and if so, how screwed am I?

Chevy bell housing bolt pattern is different than the other GM's
There are TH350(C)'s TH250C Th200's and so on that have dual chevy and BOP (Buick Olds Pontiac) patterns. But no 700R4/4l60(e) 4l80E's & Th400's that did. Some few had V6 bolt patterns (S10,Astro) and even Jaguar patterns (TH400). TH400's can be found with BOP patterns since they were used in the big boats behind big engines.

You know. racers cut the bell housing off TH400's and bolt on with the pump bolts a race legal version that acts like a scatter shield. I am wondering if you could get a blank one of those and put it on a 4L80E and drill it for ??? Cummings Isuzu Perkins Navastar :)

I've not paid attention then, never knew they had two bolt patterns on one bell housing.

I would be interested to hear more about the cutting off of a bell housing and installing the scatter shield. That could potentialy be a good way to go. Are these the scatter sheilds I see in Summit?

Its the later models that can have a dual pattern. For instance I have a TH350C that was behind a 89 Olds diesel that is Chev/BOP.
As far as the cutting off the the bell housing of a 4L80E, that is thinking out loud, research would be required. I don't know if Summit has the parts I mentioned.

A diesel engine is merely a gas engine with a higher compression ratio, no ignition system, glows to start it and a complicated injection system that replaces the carburetor.

The injection system is sensitive to water and has tight tolerances. The cost of the pump is on par with a new Holley carburetor. (Not a cheap Edelbrock.) As well as the injectors themselves. So think of it as a dual carb setup for cost and complexity.

A compression test is a total waste of time and effort. The diesel will violently turn your gas engine compression tester into shrapnel. 21:1 vs. 9:1. Spin the engine: is the starter loading 8 times in 2 rotations of the crank? A hole in the piston is an unmistakable “zip” as the starter runs faster unloaded for a longer time during the missed compression stroke load. Want to know more: when the engine is running do a blowby test.

Hopefully you avoided engine damage, but, the above test should let you know.

A diesel needs speed and heat to start. Forget the ignition system issues of a gas engine. Batteries, condition of cables and starter, grounds, and glow plugs are the new issues. You need 100 RPM cold cranking speed minimum, 150 RPM hot.

Fuel: you need air free fuel under pressure at the fuel filter water drain. Air bleeder valve on top of the filter is open with the lift pump running until air free fuel flows. (Generally when it quits burping air.) Then you need a few 30 second starter bursts to purge air from the lines.

The PMD is known to die and bad grounds are known to FUBAR the computer and PMD to prevent starting.

With the above what else have you done to bring your diesel back to life? If you have a working lift pump and pressure we can move on to see what else is causing trouble. The engine will start if the block heater is used to warm it up (takes hours) should the glow plugs be bad.

Norm,

I'm not seeing if you installed a new lift pump yet your thread jumps to compression test and glow plugs. You also say that the ops is too fried to start the truck. If the ops is fried then a new LP won't do anything for you because it keeps the LP from working IIRC. Before jumping into other realms you need to get either the ops and or LP fixed so you can start the truck. From there you should be able to see/hear if the spray into the air filter caused a bent or broken rod.

now the question I think you are asking is what will bolt to the tranny? answer: any chevy motor. you are getting some facts carried over from the oldsmobile 5.7L diesel, which would require a BOP bellhousing pattern motor to go back in. the 6.2L/6.5L engine program was a new from the ground up program, and they have always and will only use a chevy bellhousing pattern.

I would advise against it, gas engines are okay, but IMO, diesel is the full package. power, torque, and fuel economy.

let me tell you since buying 1 6.5L like 8 years ago, we have quite the collection now. they are cheap, economical rigs that have suprising power and torque. they are also capable of great fuel mileage. IMO, gassers cant have all of these qualities at the same time. once you get your mind around how all of their subsystems operate, and what is dependent on what, these are quite simple motors.

I would start at square one, put the wiring back to stock, get a new OPS and LP, and go from there. in the end, you will have a running truck. Use warwagons comparison to try and understand it. diesel is quite simple when you get to know it, and all that is special about the 94+ 6.5L is that it has an electronic controlled injection pump.

good luck!

Well folks, thank you for the info and ideas. I haven't done anything since the last time I posted on it. My lumbar spine is all bulging disks, and pinching of the sciatic nerve, and I have been pretty much down for over a month now. I am having to use a cane to walk at all, and don't do that well. When I am able to get back on it, my first plan is to verify what is up with the LP. Is it, or is it not working? Then I will go from there.

If I understand what I just read... a BB would bolt right to my tranny? I really do not want to give up the 6.5, but I am always considering options. I have a line on a Buick 455 Stage motor, for $400. I am exploring the idea more for knowledge than anything though, as I don't really believe that my 6.5 is shot. I had, and suspect I still have a fuel delivery issue. Once I can move around again, with help from all of you folks, I will figure it out.

Thanks again!

Norm

There are few things that give me any relief. My chiropractor, my inversion table, my hot tub. Exercise? Nope. Not after 3 shoulder surgeries, crushed T-12 vertebrae, bad lower spine, bad knees, and the ball of one foot pounded into pieces. I am down to about 233, from a high of 286, and it has taken about 2 years to get here.

What makes it rough is days like yesterday. Had to work on the building, had to trim some trees... and that extending saw/pruner is a bear, with bad shoulders and back. I took it easy today, but will be back at it tomorrow. I do not like pain pills. Ten hydros is a 12-18 month supply for me. I am trying some extended release Tramadol, but the nausea is about as bad as the pain. Not sure I don't prefer the pain. I will get through it though, I want my truck running again.

X2 on the hot tub that & I also use epsom salt baths 3~4 times weekly, both help me.

Wish ya were closer to us up here in Ill. we'd give ya a hand trouble shooting yr truck...

Thank you. I would be using epsom salts also, but this old house only has a shower, and I suspect they would be rough on the pump for the hot tub... Yeah, I wish I was closer to someone who knew diesels too. Since I'm not, I am trying to learn.

X3 back, knee, hip, sholder, messed up from, a fall in my teens, motorcycle accident, fall in the drained pool, fall through the porch, fall off ladder/scaffolding, and a few others. Doc said years ago its a wonder I can walk at all.
What helps: loosing 30lbs (big one), Inversion table, hot tub, a few yoga and karate stretching moves I picked up, and the occasional aleave to get to sleep when the pain is really bad. I have had to use script painkillers in the past but not for years. Sticking to a routine of diet, exercise, inversion and hot tub keeps it livable, no need for the "lead" pill so far :)
Actually I am back in school to bone up for a desk job, so I can stay active longer doing fun things instead of just work. :)
Has this group ever had a Gathering or Field Day were the guys in a reasonable driving distance get together at some locale?

No idea on that, but I am a member of some motorcycle forums... two of them meet in Pigeon Forge, TN yearly, and one of them meets in Maggie Valley, NC yearly.

Sounds like a fun idea.

Oh hell yea we have had some get togethers' up here in Ill. BTFarm Mike on this board has hosted more then one gathering for us & recently Mike also suggested something more central about a month or so ago like maybe in Indiana iirc...I'd have to find that post. Maybe he will spot this & jump in here
