Oil Leak

I have a very similar leak. As I reach around underneath the fuel manager, I find wetness there. I'm beginning to think that my fuel manager is leaking, and as the diesel runs down the valley and off the back of the motor, it soaks up all the oil and gunk and dirt and grime, and looks like an oil leak.

This is the denial I am trying in order to avoid the rear main. Mine for sure was not the 4WD adapter. I replaced it.

In that case don't smell it, and it won't NOT smell like diesel :) FWIW my engine is a little wet back there too, I'm almost positive its just fromt he fuel bowl bleeder overflow when bleeding. It's impossible to clean back there.

The fuel heater at the bottom of the bowl is notorious for leaking. I would replace w/ a new bowl and filter. Mine is dry. There is nothing running down the back of my engine.

Hey this is your thread! Don't bring my leaks into it!!! I still need the damn oil cooler lines (why I was peeping your DIY link) :) LOL.... J/k thanks for the heads up on that. Once I get them cooler lines installed i'll narrow down whatever 'other' leaks I may have...

Just being helpful. :D

I confirmed it is the upper turbo oil return where the leak is coming from. Is there a way to replace the gasket w/out removing the turbo and fender well?

Would recommend removing the wheel well. The 10 minutes spent doing that will be made up for trying to do it without removal.

In order to get the gasket surfaces clean you will need to pull the turbo because you can't get the tube out without doing so.

You may as well get the turbo to drain tube gasket, hose and drain to block gasket while you are at the dealer. The top gasket is some high temp material and is only available from the stealer.

Rodd,

Did you do the full on turbo removal? I am in oil leak hell.

Thanks.

Yes fender well and all. It took me about 2 hours or so. I cleaned up both ends w/ some sand paper and then put a very very thin layer (I could still see the metal, translucent) of RTV on the turbo side and put the gasket on and then reassembled. Hopefully it holds up until I save the $$$ for an ATT.

One more thing. When I put the turbo back together last year after replacing the injectors I used RTV as a gasket. Well when I got the gasket off I noticed the RTV has swelled so much it left about a 1/8 inch hole for the oil to get through. Now the exhaust is much louder.
