Oil leak opinions

Have had a fairly decent oil leak for about 3 years, has gotten to adding
a quart every 700 miles or so. It's coming from the front, but I really can't
tell where.
I am fairly lazy,so I need to know - would it be worth the effort to
pull the balancer and change just the oil seal, or pull the whole timing
cover? Seal is about 10 bucks, and labor (mine) is minimal, so I'm thinking
it's worth a shot - worst thing that can happen is I'll still have to pull
the cover if the leak remains :D

EDIT: Not the oil cooler lines

One area that can be a probably cause is the turbo drainback tube.

Either the hose connection at the block fitting or the gasket under the turbo.

These can make quite a mess.

Also the O ring on the crank position sensor.

I would pull the fan shroud off and get the accesssories out of the way so you can see whats going on.

Any major leak will present itself.

Tried power washing it, still hard to pinpoint - there's oil on both
sides, so if the turbo drain is leaking, it's not the only thing.
I think I am going to pull the HB and see how things look, with
oil on both sides of the engine, may be getting slung around by
the HB after leaking out the seal.
Going diving in Panama city this weekend, so I'll probably check
it around the middle of next week.

Get under there with engine gel degreaser and a ton of rags and start spraying and wiping.... when its clean, fire it up and go back under it and watch....

Check the oil cooler. The oil can go through the radiator and get slung everywhere by the fan.
Funny thing is, it doesn't seem to be flinging any up, none on inner
fenders or hood, radiator shroud is clean.....
I'll do the gunk/power clean again (tried to find this leak a few months ago)
and I'll post back up what I find.

Its not the infamous crimps on the oil cooler lines?? catching fan drift? Take the plastic shield off and watch it run after wiping everythign down spotless of course.

I won't swear it's not, cooler lines have a little oil on them, they're a
couple of years old - but if it was going thru the radiator, or the fan
was flinging it, it'd be on the hood or shroud too, and they are dry.

I really think it's the front seal, oil is being flung to either side and down,
but the water pump is keeping th HB from flinging it up....
I'll know next week :D

Gunked it, pressure washed it, pulled the seal......
Balancer has a slight groove in it, no place in town had a new one,
or a repair sleeve, so I installed the new seal for now, old one was
hard and brittle, so we'll see.
I'm gonna have to pull it down and check the timing chain soon,
using the breaker bar and rotating crank back and forth quickly, I
can hear a slight noise, like slack (slight) in the chain. Didn't have
all the parts lined up, and couldn't leave it down, need it to get to work.
Hopefully the oil leak, or at least the major portion of it, is fixed.

OK, seal was about 60% of the leak, on the passenger side, I have a
small leak, it's either on the turbo drain plate (with 4 bolts going to the block)
or at the timing cover. I suspect drain plate/adapter, but it's right next to
timing cover, so......
Also have a leak on the drivers side, I can't find the source of this one.
Seems to be coming from the area of the motor mount - too far back to be
the seal (that area's dry) but too far forward to be the oil filter or cooler
adapter, lines are fairly new. Laid under the truck with a flashlight, doesn't
seem to be coming from the head. Motor mount area, and runs down the frame
(eventually, it's not a huge leak)
This is getting kind of aggravating :mad2:

After further review (and pressure washing) :D
the area near the motor mount was just still wet with oil, now is
clean and leak free - the timing cover is definitely leaking on the
driver side, and probably is the source of the leak on the passenger
side as well, but I will reseal the turbo drain when I do the timing
cover, just to be sure. Gonna have to order parts, and have them in
hand before starting this job.

Anyone hear an echo?? Quiet in this post!! :D

It'll probably be about 3 or 4 weeks before I start this.
I work alone, so write ups are a pain, trying to keep
grease off the camera...... but I'm gonna try to take pics
and do a write up as I go, for the people that haven't
done this before.

Taking the inner fender liner out is a lot of work for nothing. I can't begin to guess how many times I've taken the turbo out very easily and I know in less time than it it took to take out the liner.

Yeah, I don't know if I'da done that, but he was doing the turbo
and the glows too...... But once the turbo's out, access to the glows
is much better. It is a good writeup nonetheless.

Update: My leak(s) were to the point of adding about one to one and
a half quarts at every fill up, about every 600 miles.
I still have a small leak, stays damp. Probably the timing chain cover... :mad2:
But after changing the oil cooler lines, and pulling the turbo drain fitting off
the block, resealing it and putting a new hose and clamps on it,there are
no puddles under the truck . After 2 fill ups, and about 1200 miles,
I can't tell that the level on the dipstick has changed.
I can live with this.
