Oil Change Interval

Well shoot since its free send me some. I'll pay for the shipping to. OR I can pay you in Trident bubble gum? Deal?
 
I have an Amsoil dual bypass set up on my 95 (specs below) and run the 15W40 Amsoil, mostly light towing and hauling over the highway it used 3qt in 15K miles @5K it sampled good, @10K it was on the low end but Useable, @15 they said get the $#!% out of there.
I ran 500 miles with a stock filter, cheap oil, and Seafoam in the oil (for a fresh start); i drained that and started my intervals over again.
My truck seperated the balancer 100 miles after I took the 5K sample and I still havent sent that in, figured I would just start fresh when I get it going again.

My 93 just gets cheap oil because it needs 1qt ~ 500-800 miles and gets changed when it comes time for the 4th qt ~1500. (I draw the line at adding a gallon of oil to a truck, lol)

I run Rotella T6 in my Dmax and have just stuck to a 5K interval but it doesnt use a drop of oil and really doesnt look bad at all.

I only had a couple cases when Rusty closed up so my supply wasnt caught up, luckly Rusty had me come in and work last week and put together a couple cars to sell and I got 4 more cases, so im good for a while
 
I know on my 6.5 I changed it out at 5K miles using 15W40 ROTELLA, and it always came out looking nice still and wouldn't be down but maybe a cup in 5K miles

IIRC doesn't the 6.5 have a 7500 mile recommended change interval for standard driving?

FWIW the wifes 06 Escalade with the computer recommended oil change interval usually comes out around 7500 on plain dino juice.

The Jetta TDI I just sold with Castrol Synthetic factory fill recommended 10000 service intervals.

... I think people waste a lot of oil with this 2500 and 3000 change intervals. Just a way to line Jiffy Lubes pockets off soccer moms.

Nothing scientific here, but I went from Delo 15w40 where I barely consumed any oil at 3000 mile intervals, to Rotella T6 5w40 Synthetic and it consumes a quart every 3000 miles.
 
I run Amsoil HDD and an EaO filter 15-17k in our 05 and usually have to add a quart somewhere in there. Never had an analysis done, I really need to though...

And the oil is usually black within 50 miles, just a byproduct of a diesel engine from what I've seen.

In general you are correct about the "old" 3K oil change as a lot of manufactures don't require that anymore. But the 6.2/6.5 is an "old" engine and a dirty one at that.
Oil change should be based off fuel burned more than miles. So normal driving will have a higher oil change mileage.

I digress, with the hard towing I did, adding 1 quart every day, I changed the oil at 3K every week and UOA was saying I was pushing the limits of the oil. 7MPG so it was a lot of fuel burned. DI vs. IDI, ring technology, higher pressure injection systems, a cleaner burning engine: all factors that extend oil life.

That is what I think too. The fuel is what is contaminating the oil not necessarily the odometer clicking. Just easier to track by milage for avg joe shmo is my guess why the mfgs reference it.
 
I change all three of our trucks at 5000 mile intervals. Makes it easy to remember when to change them. I did stretch my 93 6.5 out to 10,000 miles a couple times using the
AMSOIL heavy duty 15W-40. The oil analysis came back fine. My truck actually uses less oil since switching to AMSOIL.
 
Anybody ever feel like the their "Change Engine Oil" message came on way too soon? I changed the oil in my LMM in the end of Feb, and it just came on the yesterday. Thats less than a month and a half and I know I didnt go more than 3000 but since I have always trusted the computer I dont know exactly how far I went. I pulled a trailer down the highway a fair amount but not a lot. I dont know is this something I should worry about or just change it and watch it better this next time through?? I only have like 63K on the truck... Thanks guys
 
Not to insult your intelligence or anything, but are you sure that you reset the DIC? Sometimes if you do not hold down the buttons long enough, the DIC does not reset. I had this happen to me, that is why I am mentioning this. I always try and use a sharpie permanent marker and write the mileage on the outside of the filter can. I would think a rough estimate would be about 6 months or so for a change. But it all depends on how many miles are driven.

Again, just trying to think out loud here. Not trying to insult.

The change engine oil on the LMM is based off of how fuel goes through the engine instead of how many miles driven. If it goes into regen alot, it will turn the light on in a HURRY!
 
Not resetting the DIC is definately something I would do, but I know I reset it because I always drive it until it tells me to change. I am going to just change it out and watch it better this time. Writing the miles on the filter is a good idea, time to stop trusting computers again. Thanks again fellas...

The DIC may be correct though. In some instances you can go maybe 2K miles between changes I believe if your stuck in regen.
 
That brings me to another question. As long as I have driven the truck, a year now, I have never seen anything that indicated the truck was in regen. I drive a fair amount of highway miles and i was under the impression it would regen during those trips and I wouldnt necessarily know about it?

FORDS will tell you when they are in regen on the DIC, but GM does not tell you about normal regens. If you have an EDGE INSIGHT monitor you can set it up to tell you when it goes into regen and wether it is passive or active regen. And they can go into regen anytime it is running. When they go into regen at idle they will stink something fierce.
