OBDII

As promised, here is the how-to describing the process of setting TDCO using Car Code. Sorry for the delay as things have been hectic the last couple of weeks.

As a side bar, when I was setting this doc up, my TDCO was set at -1.85. After I had set everything, I came up with the magical -1.94. How is that for luck.):h

If you have any questions, let me know.

If theres enough time to set up a meet before I leave the area maybe you could check out my timing! :D

Ah crap. Your document will not open up for me. I was going to save it into my computer so I did not have to try and remember the voodoo dance you have to go through with to get the TDCO program to work.

Thanks gwomack, I've had carcode for over a year and have barely used it, now when I need to set timing I won't have to figure it out. Leo

IIRC there was a user ID that had to be entered with my OBD-2 software, it could be because I got the enhanced version. Leo

Excellent info!
I'm reading myself green on timing stuff now as I discovered that my car code reader is up to snuff on it. I didn't realize before, thought all the functionality I would get out of it was a code reader. :)

I got it too. It is kind of weird to use. I messed with my timing for a good while without moving the pump and could only get it to like -1.06 and very seldomly -1.23. Then all of a sudden I say the hell with it, disable everything, move the truck back in front of the garage, and all of a sudden it is now at -1.41.

Jacob,

Read your PM's. Everything you are reporting looks good. As an FYI, factory specs are -.50*. The magical TDCO is -1.94*. Anything in between is good to go. In my opinion, -1.41 is good and I wouldn't mess with it. You don't have enough mods to justify messing with turning the IP to get -1.94*.

BTW, I never use the "disable" button in the tool. It doesn't work. When I get the setting I want, I just shut the truck off. That is what the how-to document states. As a matter of fact, you don't have to click any buttons; just a click of the window will cycle through the ranges. I probably should put this bit of info. in the doc.

Are you saying that clicking on the window that displays TDCO will cycle through the possible ranges the PCM can control? I noticed it sometimes changed when updating.

Quomack, I've been reading alot of your threads, I remember you saying in one of them that you never turned your pump. Did you end up turning your pump to get -1.94? I'm going to assume you did. It shows me having a timing of 12*, but in TDCO Learn sometimes it drops to 3* or so.

Also, have you ever used the Timing Set mode? What would that be for?

And that 'disc' looking thing at the top after the enable/disable buttons, ever figure out what that is for? Seems you can move the red dot around, not sure what effect it has.

Using 02 6.5 L65 made everything including cylinder shut-downs to function. The 97 L65 I could read data, but not use the enhanced testing procedures for some reason. Now I know to use the 02.

Have you ever found a forum or FAQ or anything of good interest to read about this software?

That is my experience.

No, I did not turn my pump. When I get the best TDCO, I would reach over and turn the truck off. It is not uncommon to play with the TDCO for 10 to 15 minutes until you get the best setting. In your case however, you may have to turn the pump to get -1.94*. Your mileage may vary. 12* during normal run time is normal and it will drop to about 3* during TDCO learn. The key factors you are looking for is Injection Pump Timing (IPT) desired being close to IPT actual.

Also, have you ever used the Timing Set mode? What would that be for?

No, I have not used to Timing Set mode. From my understanding, Time Set is for OBDI and maybe it is a carry over from there. I have played with it but have not found it useful, yet.

I have found that it is only functional when adjusting idle speeds. When in the high idle mode, you can choose different speeds using that wheel. It comes in handy when setting TDCO. I would set the idle speed lower than stock and would manage to get a little more advance as the engine is trying to recover. Sounds confusing but try playing with the two and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Yeah the 02 thing is confusing to me as well. We all know that by 2002 GM was fully D'Maxed.

No I have not. Maybe that is something we could pick the gauntlet up on. Right now Turbine Doc has my cable for comparison purposes. I am hoping he could shed some light on the mysteries of Car Code as he has experience with other Diagnostic Scanners like the TechII and the Snap-On MT2500. We'll see what pans out.

Thanks for the thorough replies and the information.

CarCode could use a little refinement, for example the Enhanced data could store High/Low/Changes as the regular Data does.... Few other minor things, but It works, its cheap, and does the job.
