I may have dicked around too long on that 92 GMC in Oregon, the add is down, so there might go a possible recipient of a set of gears, as it had enough miles I am betting it was getting stretched out pretty good.
Oh well, at least there is no shortage of rigs I can spend money on around here, so I am sure I can find one worthy of gears somewhere...

Why is one idler gear larger than the other?

Its bigger mostly for clearance so IP gear clears the axle. It is necessary to machine the axle on small gear for clearance.

I was going to guess it had to do with tooth count and keeping everything in sync.
