So before we did any modifications, my family and I took this truck on a road trip for about 6 hours each way - bone stock. Our trip was from northern Ca. down hwy 5 to southern Ca. We loved the truck, but soon into the trip I had a ton of idea’s to help with the ride and handling of the truck. I started the modifications off with the list above. After the truck was done, we took it on another road trip without the faith wheel toy hauler. Both myself and my wife saw a big difference. The over-all ride was completely smoother, not so bone jarring when it went over bumps in the road. Around town it’s great. On our freeways we have those break points where the concrete meets and you get that very uncomfortable “thump thump thump” feel. Well, that’s also improved dramatically. The Toyo mud terrain tires are a bit louder than if I would have picked all terrains, but I need the muds for the grip when I pull my toy hauler into the sand when we camp so I don’t mind the noise.

I drive this truck daily, and its here at Nor-Cal Truck for any members to feel free and come by to see the product or take a test drive in it to see how it works.

Next on the install list:
  • Amp electric steps

If you have any questions feel free to post a reply or PM me and I will be happy to help.

And the last pic...

The pic's have notes on them for some members that are looking to do the same upgrades to help understand what we did to make the product work on my build.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Nor-Cal Nick

***** Up Date 7-1-08 *****
Nor-Cal Nick’s 2008 Chevy 3500HD LMM *** Up-Date ***

Since the last upgrades to my truck were done a few months back, the first new change we made was removing the DPF system. This first modification was done as we searched to satisfy the need for more performance, HP, and mileage. With the removal of the DPF, the install of the MBRP 5” turbo back system, and updating my PPE performance tuner to turn off the DPF feature, we obtained these stats.

PPE lev. 1 / no DPF-
While towing a WW3905 (39 foot) 18K fifth-wheel trailer under normal towing conditions, pulling hills I was looking at 14mpg average, round-trip. This was calculated over the course of 3 different trips. All was calculated by hand (mile drove vs. gal.’s used). I also had a chance to run my truck on a dyno (DynoJet) with a PPE level 6 loaded and no DPF. At this setting I was able to pull these dyno runs:

4-5-08 426hp./688tq.

I was very pleased with the mileage I was seeing with the PPE. I started looking at EFI Live, not so much for more mileage, but to take my tuning ability to the next level. I ended up talking to Nick with Duramaxtuner.com. There are a ton of tuners out there that are getting big HP #’s, but that’s not what I’m after. I wanted someone that would take the time necessary and work towards obtaining a good power tune for towing a large load, and at the same time keep mileage in mind. As of right now, we have been bouncing off each other to get where I want to be. I will have more info later as we go on with testing. Nick has a library that you can pull tunes off of, so I installed a few of his tunes for some great street power. I had the chance to run his “400hp Fun Tune” on the dyno with the same mod’s as I had ran the PPE before. Here is what I ended up running:

View dyno run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_6kpZNv6Ns

6-7-08 “400hp Fun Tune” 414hp./786tq.
Also,
6-7-08 “LMM08_08_HOT_6.07.08_Highboost” 440hp./805tq.

So with some tuning, I picked up a few HP on the dyno. I would also like to add that “out of the box” the PPE unit is great for power and mileage as you can see from the outcome.

Next we needed to upgrade the fuel and tranny. I started the fuel upgrade with a Nicktane Filter kit to keep my fuel as clean as possible. To get a steady PSI up out of the fuel tank, I called Steve @ TTS power systems. He has a great flow-through fuel lift pump kit that fits right above the fuel cooler - very discrete and quiet. He also stated that it would be a good idea to open up the fuel pick up in the tank as well. We also installed a TransGo Jr. that will help agaist clutch slippage with my power upgrades.

One product that I had seen talked about recently was called the PCV reroute. I saw a few people making up there own kits with parts that they had obtained from a local automotive store. I also saw a post that Tony Burkhard had made a VERY nice little turn key kit. It had billet fittings that bolted to the valve covers, so I had to have it. I called Tony and ordered a kit. We didn’t get a chance to talk for too long, since both of our phone lines were ringing … but just a couple days later I had a box sitting on my desk that had all the parts needed, including those kick ass billet fittings. Thanks Tony!!

I want to give a big “THANKS” to Titan fuel tanks. They have been telling us about the new Super Series larger tank that was soon to be released. The only problem was that I was running out of time and couldn’t wait for the new series to come out to fit into my schedule. I had a bunch of parts ready to be installed into my truck and needed to get a larger tank on at the same time. I was on the verge of telling them to just go ahead and ship me the most recent Gen V. tank, when they called and said they where shipping the first tank of the new series to us.

Thank you Titan Fuel Tanks, this new “Super Series” 62-gallon tank is HUGE!!!
