Morning all,

Three days ago my truck threw a code and shutoff while driving randomly, wouldnt start back up for 20 min or so then sudddenly comes back to life. Ok, so my first thought was thats the PMD doing that. So I get it home and going to swap PMDs. Go to try and start the truck again for the hell of it, turn key and nothing happens on that dash. The gear indicator is lit up but nothing else. No gauge reset (volts still at 0 temp is reading 80* etc) but will still turn over when I hit the key, glow plug light comes on when i flip the switch but no start. Swap PMD same syptoms, nothing happening on the dash.
I disconnected the batteries and made sure all the grounds were good and not broken. They all are clean as well. Hooked everything back up and still nothing. I grab my laptop with GMTDscan and connect to the truck, it wont connect to the PCM. I dont know whats the next diagnostic step in this instance. Anyone have an idea?
Thanks
Brandon

EDIT: Also went through all the fuses and there are all good. Back to scratching my head. lol

fuseable link? Really sounds like you lost power supply to half the truck. Connections at fuse block maybe? Find something dead that should be lit up with key on then chase it backwards and I bet you find 1 item with bad connection killing everything.

I was really hoping that no one would suspect the ign switch! haha thall be a pain in the ass. Theres a fuesable link in the power supply to the fuse block is there not? Ill see what links I can find and go from there. Thanks you guys, its been a head scratcher so far.

I didnt know there was a link in the wires to the starter, thanks wiggle. I did replace the starter about a month ago now with no issues between then and now. Ill and make sure they are still tight.

EDIT* If the motor will still turn over while all this is happening would that not mean the starter connections and wires are good? Still going to check them tonight and make sure they are good and tight. Just seems they shoud be ok since it will still spin when you turn the key. Just nothing else.

When you put switch to start power is going threw ignition switch to the solenoid ...so it cranks......power may not be going out of the solenoid...that's the reason to check ......your right side battery has a fuseable link on the Positive post wire[black]runs over wheel well to the junction block on your firewall.....it might go to post 1 of junction block black wire

well guys, it was the ignition switch. Seen a post about one and the guy ended up banging around the column and it fired up. So i tried that with mine and low and behold two bangs later the dash lights up and fires up! turn it off to restart and dead again. Pretty confident its the switch. What a PITA this is going to be.
Thanks for all your help guys

Hope you slide back and tell us if your problem is solved EH .....plus I'am interested in finding out if your ELM 327 software program communicates now after the fix ......many others are probably wondering even if it's fixed or not

fianlly was able to get a E5 female torx order and NAPA didnt lose it the second time. Got the new switch and key cylinder in and voila! shes back to normal. Laptop communicates with truck again, Batteries arent slowly discharging over night! yeehaw!
It was relativley easy to replace, actually.

My read is that this looks like a design issue that effects safety. If there is any opportunity to get this addressed at an engineering level, now is the time to make sure we (owners) enter the data where it counts; especially seeing this is now a topic at the Federal level.

And, Yes, entering data on a vehicle that is *way* out of warantee can still get attention *ONLY* if people make it known.

Point is, a search last week on Chevy and GM from 1993 - 2002 for 'ignition switch' returned 84 results in SaferCar.gov. If we want something done to help address the commonly known issue, we need to use the tools that will get attention on it.

That's great you came back to let us know.....my pleasure to make it easier....should check my new thread Free diesel software EH
