Hey, got another project I started a couple weeks ago. I will be installing a TDI from a 2002 Golf into a 1987 Pontiac Fiero.
I bought the Golf wrecked in the front, air bags poped so the car was totaled by ins co. I got it for $2200. Got a very nice Fiero also.
Its been raining for the last four days so have not got much done. One of the biggest issues is going to be the wire harness.
Im hoping for atleast 55mpg.

Drove up to San Antonio to get the Golf.

Got it home.

Power steering pump was damaged

along with the starter.

Pulling the engine. I droped the engine down after mounts were disconected, then it comes straight out. Even with the learning curve it was pretty easy.

Engine out.

The power steering pulley being damaged was not an issue as the Fiero all have manual steering anyway. This meant I had to defete or delete the pump anyway.

I think deleting it was a better way as it would just be acting like a pulley. An extra pulley that can break!
So, I got to looking at the serp belt and saw it would be possible to delete the pump.

I used the shortest belt I could find (pic above) and it worked perfect.

I call this mod the "Linza p/s delete mod"

Pic of the Fiero engine. For those that might not know the Fiero is a mid engine car (engine in rear).

I wanted to do a SBC (how original) in an '88 Fiero until I drove one...

The Fieros had an auto 4 speed didn't they? Some were 5 speed manual too.

Nice. How many miles on the 2002 TDI? You should be able to recoup some of that by parting out the rest of that VW.

Yep, some were 5 speed. This one is an auto.
I owned a Fiero when I was a young-un. I really liked it. I sold it to a buddy...then it burned on him. I think most of them burned hahaha.
Burn baby!

Thats the plan. 139000 miles. Timming belt is first on the list after I have it running again.

That Fiero is a pretty lightweight car, even plastic body panels.. If you can keep the R's down it'll get some killer MPGs. I'm not sure of their final drive through the tires..

Cool project
Thank you. Do you have any projects/post going on? A late welcome to TTS.

Any pics of the fiero? Sounds cool!
Just came here to post then forgot I had not loaded them, so next post will be some

You go Leroy!!!!! Its the Linza Sports car!!!!!
I am going to build a second totaly custom car with a longitudinal mid engine drivetrain after this one and call it a "Linza Spec1"

I really like all of these project threads! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I've said it many times, this is my therapy. If i was'int building something I would go crazy.

It will have the 5 speed from the TDI so its geared pretty good. The Fiero will be a few hundred#s lighter than the Golf and more areodynamic. I read on another forum a guy getting 73mpg with the same basic drivetrain. I can't remember what car he used though. The Fiero is 2600# I think when I build the Linza Spec1 it will wiegh 2200 or less.

FWIW the Fiero had a 5 star crash rating and the only car to better it was a Volvo wagon. I do not remember if this rating was for all years or just one? I was impressed though.

The GT version! I've always thought those things were a cool little car.

At first I thought you just swapping the engine only in..

I like it!!! The GT version is the best looking of all the Fieros.

I'll be keeping close tabs on this swap as I'm very interested in somehow coming up with a fuel miser vehicle.

Way ahead of myself here, but Im allready gathering parts and designing for the next project.
You know how you think of something and then start designing in your head? Well this car is "almost exactly what I was thinking.
I would have to build the poor mans version of it though. I think I could come in under 2200#s. It would be a car for fun driving, very sporty, excellent MPGs, excellent handling and decent performance with a pumped up TDI in it.
This car has a transverse engine (like a Fiero) I want to do a longitudinal next time.

I allready have the transaxle, got it for $250 I think it was. It was out of a Audi A4 FWD. Its a 5 speed with the best gearing I could find in the states. As the A4/Passat is much heavier and Im only running a TDI in front of it. I think it will do the job. I just hope the gearing is good enough or I'll have to look to Germany for a transaxle from a diesel.

Edit: as a nice benefit it will bolt up without adaptors :agreed:

Ah well you are already on your way then.

When you said transaxle I thought you were gonna use one of these nice little Emco SMG's.. :D
