Newbie help: step-by-step PMD replacement

Okay, read about 10 times, I understand it all in theory now. I will do the PMD relocation and fuel filter replacement next week and will do fuel pressure test like you say. I might also try the fuel pressure test described in that thread regarding highway speed psi, idle psi, hard acceleration psi.

Thank you very much again for the help. I am learning a lot.

Call Mark at Diesel fuel injection in Portland.

He is not too far off I5 east of the freeway near the Jubitz truck stop.

They are great people. He sells the DTECH units.

I use these guys exclusively for my PMD and Injection pump needs.

Missy

Most likely reason for not mentioning the fuel cap can be found in the thread title.

The part that says NEWBIE help? :hihi:

We have to read deeper into the symptoms sometimes as we all forget about some of the many things that cause these engines to run weird or not at all. Making an assumption is what leads us to 15 pages of frustration.

I would not buy another Dtech. I have 2 dead ones on my bench one of which did things I have never seen a PMD do.The one in my truck now I swear has been erratic at times too. IIRC Leroy also sells the grey standadyne. I think I'd give that a whirl. Next one I buy will be that.

When you say fuel cap, do you literally mean the cap on the fuel tank? Or do you mean the cap on the fuel filter? The fuel filter cap doesn't mention diesel, but I can't see how it would be the wrong one. The fuel tank cap does say "diesel only" and yes I get a vacuum-sucking sound when I remove it.

I went to the veggie mechanic today and he recommended I do the PMD replacement myself, so I put in an order for a DTech PMD from pmdcable.com, will get shipped on Monday. Also bought the fuel pressure and turbo boost bolt/sensors while I was at it. I'll replace the fuel filter at the same time that I do the PMD relocation. And probably another oil change while I'm at it.
Yes the fuel cap on the tank. They are vented to the atmosphere. If they get plugged they won't allow fuel to run out of the tank due to a vacume condition. A fuel cap from a gasser will do the same thing because they are not vented. The symtom can be the same as a dieing pmd. Dies and will start back up in a minute or so.

If I'm reading that right your saying that the fuel tank should Not be under a vacuum? I.E. the hiss when you remove the cap..

I'm curious about this one myself. I *DO* get a hiss when I open the fuel cap.

It appears that I've solved my problem. At least the symptoms (stalling) have gone away with a PMD replacement. I bought the D-Tech one from pmdcable.com along with extension and heatsink, mounting it behind the front bumper. I'm still going to change the fuel filter again, and run a lower percent of Bio, probably just B20 or less. Thanks much to folks who contributed to this thread.

You need a new "diesel fuel" fuel cap before you go any further. Gotta rule that out. Or you could run with it loose but you'll need one anyhow if you have a tank vacuum.
