I'm confused and frustrated - seems like every forum that I go to is partial to one diesel part supplier or another. WHO is a good supplier? I've purchased several items from SS Diesel and have been very pleased, so far. But other people bad mouth them. I've ordered a new exhaust system from warpspeed. Should receive it next week. Spoke with the owner by phone for over an hour and he seemed really decent and very helpful. I'll have to let you know how the system fits, etc. I'm new to diesels - been a gasser all my life, so, I can use some advice. Also, if some one could please steer me to a post dealing with EGR issues. Thanks!!

Heathdiesel, kennedydiesel, other vendors here are good. several others referenced here that are great, which one you want depends on what part you are after. use search for problem or part to find who used what supplier. have personally had garbage parts from ss. many vendors sell, shall we say "misrepresented" parts or inventions of their own. most are junk that don't work or fix problems.

I have found this board to have the most friendly, non-combative, knowledgeable people in the 6.5 community. have you thought of switching to a "f" intake and chip from Heath-would give nice improvement and delete egr issue, although more expensive. what issues with egr are you having.

Having major black smoke issues. All started when I replaced/re-located the PMD. Prior to that, I was having the intermittent stalling problem, typical of a failing PMD. So as a preventive measure I chose to go ahead and replace the PMD with the SS Diesel kit and #9 res. At same time the weather up here got cold and the truck wouldn't start unless it was plugged in, so I also replaced the glow plugs and controller, also with the SS Diesel parts. Since then, the truck runs, but belches black smoke and has no power. Seems like the turbo isn't spooling up. Due to working 7 days/wk for the last 2 months, I haven't had time to work on truck. Til now - FIRE season is over and I'm between jobs. So the other day I cut off the CAT, thinking that maybe it was plugged up. Seems to run better now, and I can hear the turbo spooling. Can't really tell if it still smokes cause the exhaust now comes out under the floor. New 4" system should be here next week. I have been thinking about doing the "F" intake and delete the EGR all together. But right now the cost of a re-flash ECM is out of the question. All my vacuums check out OK. I was getting a P0402 and P0236 codes. They are boost and EGR issues. I did pull the intake and clean it when I replaced the wire harness that goes from the IP to the PMD (old one was tangled in the injector lines) and now I'm wondering if I might not have gotten the mystery gasket installed properly. Have you done the freeze plug in the EGR tower trick?

:welcome5:
As docray said, it depends on what you need. I will say that if your new pmd is mounted to the manifold then that is the worst place for it. You need to get it out of the engine compartment. Buy a cable somewhere and mount your heat sink/pmd elsewhere.

Welcome to TTS!

buy a cable and pmd from this guy^^^ or heath. both are great options. im bought mine from pmdcable.com and it is a great product and fast shipping to boot. good price also.

SSD's parts are alright, his placement of the pmd cooler is the worst place possible. Get a cable from Burning Oil and put the pmd in the bumper. I have his 4" exh and I like it. Check for vacuum at the pump, sol and wastegate sol.

from what i gather, some of the direct replacement parts, such as CDR valves, EGR valves, tensioner pulleys and other small replacement stuff like that, SS Diesel is fine, but move into the performance and upgrades over OEM, then SS Diesel falters.

SS diesel's PMD relocator is horrible. Have you ever held a marshmallow over a fire? similar concept. PMD= marshmallow, engine= fire. when not moving, the heat coming off the engine cooks the poor PMD when it is installed as per SS Diesel design. By moving it to the bumper, as the PMDcable.com and Heath Diesel kits do, effectively move the marshmallow away from the fire, eliminating the issue of overheating the PMD all together.

It is a little more complicated than that, I still dont fully understand it, but that is the explanation I came up with to show how SS Diesel's engineering dept. is not nearly as smart as the engineering guys at PMD cable and Heath Diesel.

I personally run a relocation kit from PMD cable.com, and am looking at getting a heath for my other rig just to try it out. When I got the truck, i could barely stand to touch the PMD (was relocated to an aluminum bracket that was intake mounted) but after buying the PMD cable.com kit, I cant feel a temp difference between the air temp and the PMD cooler temp.

good luck on the truck, you have made it to the Holy grail of 6.5L forums, and a damn fine one for anything else diesel you may have lurking around!

Welcome. The advice is free here. The forum is open to discussion about any vendor, supporting or not. The mystery PMD box design gives some vendors a black eye starting with GM.

The best cure is a DB2 conversion and relegate the computer to shifting gears and hands off the engine. Otherwise heat kills or shortens the life of electronics. So cooler is better... Advice above on how to get there.

Also check out RockAuto.com for OEM stuff. There is also a 5% discount code always floating around here.

I have had my PMD on the intake for 2 years and no problems. The newer Flight Systems / D-tech PMDs do better. My truck always runs cool in general and it never gets too cold either. It is not the heat that kills it, it is thermal cycling, from cold to hot and the colder it gets the greater the cycle. It makes sense to put it outside of the engine bay so it never cycles to hot (even though the heat doesnt kill it), and the SSD heatsink is great for that, just need the extension from PMDcable.com.

Welcome fellow Minnesotan!

I'm interested in how your Warp Speed exhaust fits and works. Take some pix before installing. Even a shot inside of the muffler would be nice.

I need an exhaust for my 3500. The one I put on my 2500 came from Evilbay back in 04 and I don't remember who I got it from, but it fit real nice and it sounds good too.

Finally have time to reply back - sorry for the delay. Seems I just don't have a lot of time to play on the computer. The "honey do" list is very long. Thanks everyone, for the warm welcome. 3Bals, I will take photo's of the exhaust install. I'm still waiting for the kit to be delivered. Then I will have to figure out how attach them to a thread. Dangerousdave, thank you for the welcome and invite to join your veteran's group, I'll check it out. Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm convinced that I'm going to have to move my PMD out of the engine bay, so I'll be contacting pmdcable for an extension. I'm a little concerned about mounting it down by the bumper. Up here in Minn, it gets mighty snowy and sloppy in the winter. Lots of road salt is used to melt snow and ice. I don't know that I would want to mount an electronic part down where it's can be blasted with all that crap. 3bals - where did you mount your's ?

I have had good luck with the following vendors:

A Team Turbo guys, turbo
Accurate Diesel, injectors
PMDcable.com, new wiring harness, Walbro pump
WarpSpeed, crossover pipe
SS Diesel, down pipe
Heath Diesel, PCM, Turbo master, fan clutch, lift pump

I had an issue with the downpipe not fitting. I conversed with the owner of SS Diesel over the phone and he determined that the motor mounts were shot, with the engine leaning over towards the passenger side. Upon replacing the mounts, the pipe fit perfectly!

I had two leaky injectors from Accurate Diesel. I returned them, no questions asked and they sent two new one via priority mail.

All in all, I've had great luck with the vendors on this site.

Wow, this is a major issue, and I've never seen it on any threads. Thanks for the tip, AKman.

Welcome!!!

On EGR issue as pointed out above, is usually caused by vacuum system. It can be the vacuum lines, vacuum pump or the EGR solenoid. Unfortunately, the same vacuum pump is used by the turbo so the Turbo Solenoid can be issue as well.

So, first thing is to get a vac/pressure gauge and check the lines.

As far as PMD, you can put it in front of the radiator area behind the grill if you are not comfortable under the bumper. PMD is sealed, the Al heatsink is the one that will be eaten up by salt. Water is really not an issue since the cable has weatherpak connector.
