New Guy from Central Oregon needs help with 6.5

Welcome!

Being a weird and seemingly an electrical problem, I'd think outside the box, check for fuel pressure at your fuel filter spigot mounted at the thermostat with and without electrical load (good idle-bad idle), perhaps your lift pump doesn't always work due to a ground or a voltage issue. If it keeps normal pressure, that wasn't it. (Most likely this is not the issue, but a very small possibility) And welcome, there are very helpful people here!

I would unplug the pmd from the extension harness and try it in the stock plug and see if it goes away. I would also check the ground at the injection pump. For good measure I would also check that the coolant sensor for the ecm is clean. On a side note my dad and I will be in the Bend area on the 1st.

welcome!

I see you have a HD model that is newer than 96, so you should have the bigger 1 1/4" input shaft. congrats!

what wheelbase is your truck? (not that it matters for diagnosis, but I am curious)

I still need to check all the smaller grounds but just cant find the time.
And yes i will unplug and re plug the ECM. and also good points 94turbo about the fuel lifter.
And the wheel base for the front is 5'9" center of tire to center and then the back is 6'6" from center of outside tire to the center of other. to answer your question GM Guy.
And Skylark I love your truck the "Black Pearl" my truck had the nickname the Beast. I am trying to sell my truck because i don't do construction anymore. however i will start a 6.5 project truck hopefully. You just cant beat the mileage this engine gets for the wight it carries. And i put this truck through hell and the owner before me, but she just keeps going.

WELCOME as well.
Thinking electrical...have the alternator tested. Also, ensure both battery negative cables are properly grounded, not just one of them.

And, Thanks for your Service to our country.

It was my honor to serve alongside the men i did. And for the symbol of our flag. Just not its politicians.
And i was thinking alternator but it only has less then a thousand miles on it cant hurt to have it tested. And both batteries are properly grounded to the body and engine.

pictures please!

Alright guys i spent my Sunday going over every ground and cleaning them. The truck is still running like it was, one thing i could not find is the ECM there is nothing under the hood but a fuse box and if it is under the dash witch side and hopefully some direction so i can find the ECM.

Welcome! Grounds, Grounds, GROUNDS, gotta check them grounds on these trucks. I added some to my truck to finally get the tranny to act right! So with the ground thing discussed I only ask you Mauler if you could help me with that woodchuck chuckin wood thing? Cant quite cipher it out.

i be leave it was if a wood chuck could chuck wood then we would try to figure out how much wood it could chuck. And good point i guess i could just add my own grounds i have extra battery cables i could use.

I always augment the ground that goes to the body by adding a ground the the bolt on the battery box. I've had most of those cheesey sgrews that go to the fender strip out or just not make good ground.
With a single wire I got to the batery box and continue to the frame. I use copper coat/copper anti-seez on everything applicable. You don't want to use it on plugs where you might get cross polination with the copper coat carrying juice from pin to pin.

I also augment the ground to the heater blower motor by running fromt there to the dash mount bolt a few inches away.

I add a ground wire from where the battery ground bolts to the intake to the ground stud by the firewall.

I also add a ground to the PMD heat sink.

I also add an additional cable from the alternator to the other battery. The OEM cable is undersized for the OEM alternator and more so if a higher output alternator has been installed.
I often just use an OEM alternator cable for that. You can easily fit 2 cables in the OEM rubber boot on the alternator

Check your lift pump by hot wiring it. Open the T drain and run about 3/4 gallon into a container. Note the flow. Look for crud, let the container sit about 20 minutes or so and look for water bubbles on the bottom. I use a gallon pickle jar.

Check the fuel filter.

Check the oil and coolant.

Thanks for that Jrsavoie, I will have to try that. I have an old set of jumper cables i was going to use just trying to find the wire ends that would fit the applications and the wire from the alternator is really small, lets just say it looks like it needs to be bigger.

Check to see how long of wire you need. If you can get to a junk yard you can rob an OEM or 2 and be in buisness fast. They usually don't charge much for that.

If you make your own, I would use At least #8 for an auxilary wire.
I'd be more inclined to #6 or #4 wire.

I'd also do the the battery bolt upgrade. I replace the OEM battery bolts with a stainless 3/8-16 set screw, Then I use 3 washers that fit in the rubber behind a nut. It makes it easy to add extra wire to a connection
