hey everyone im from illinois and im looking to buy a duramax, trying to decide which one i should get, looking to stay 04 or newer

Basically any Duramax you will buy odd's will be it's going to be a good truck.

04 LB7 models have know injector issues. 04.5 LLY's have the injector harness problems, but a easy fix, and Some LLY's overheat, also not that common I don't think. 06+ LLY, LBZ have some piston cracking failures in High Horsepower applications. LMM have the DPF (filter) which everyone removes for better mileage.

Ask any questions you may have.

Jeff

jeff pretty much covered it.

Injector failure on the LB7 motor (01-04). its covered by a special service policy for 7 years and 200,000 miles though.

Injector harness issues on the LLy(04.5-05) some overheated when towing. They also have a poorly designed intake mouthpiece, however porting it out or putting an LBZ mouthpiece on helps out.

LBZ is a good motor for most people. Yes they crack pistons but thats over 500RWHP which most people arent at. The only other bad thing is that it likes fuel.

LMM is an LBZ with emissions stuff. Deleting the DPF makes them one fun truck, but it is illegal if caught.

Basically if you dont want to deal with any emissions stuff, get an LB7. All models after the LB7 have EGR/Cats etc.

Also, if you are after sound heres what they sound like straightpiped. The LLy, LBz, and LMM all sound like a giant vaccum cleaner. I think the LLY is the worst of the bunch. The LB7 has a deep rumble and sounds like a loud V8 diesel.

Now stock for noise in the cab and such each newer model got quieter and quieter, i cant even hear the New LMMs unless I try to listen for one. If you stick your ear by the exhaust there is basically less sound than a honda.

thanks guys im currently looking at an 04 that has an lb7 in it, i just didnt want to make the purchase without first checking into pros and cons

Could have injector issues. Depending on the dealer they can be sorted out for little to no charge to the customer.

Keep in mind the '03 and '04 model years didn't have as many issues with injector problems as the '01-'02. And if it does happen to have problems there is special coverage up to 200k. So don't let the possibilities of injector problems scare ya.

so i was going to go buy that 04 that i was talking about today, but the dealership sold it about 2hours after i talked to them last night :(

guess its back to searching
