Road trip to Washington to look at a 1999 K1500 GMC (happy now BT Farm) Suburban. Inspection revealed a good looking vehicle that is still in need of some love.

IMG_8861.JPG

186K miles. Engine Replaced by GM at 95K (oil line fail, took the motor). IP replaced at 115K. 3:42 gearing. Oil lines started leaking so the OP pulled the cooler out and didn't replace it. This was just before he decided to park it.

Original Owner was a dog lover...plenty of hair on the carpet and back seats to weave a throw rug. Also his wife smoked (killer her) so there were some butts here and there in hidden corners. After her death he parked it for a couple of years and then sold it for the work and parts owed. It sat in the corner with the other Burbs he's got stashed back there for a couple of more years getting an occasional loan out. Maintenance was done to keep it road worthy but interior needs a LOT of love. For all that, there's no cigarette or dog smell at all and I'm hyper sensitive to those two odors.

I was told the A/C didn't work and the stereo only played on one speaker. First reports are seldom correct as they work fine. Driver's door speaker isn't equal in output so that's a new pair up front.

Motor: Slight puff from Dip Stick but it passes the blow by test. Only a wisp of vapor from Oil Fill Tube.
Oil only has a hundred or so miles and is clean.
Engine compartment has all the liner and firewall covers intact but, it certainly doesn't meet my standard of cleanliness. I've got clean Upper and Lower Intakes sitting on the shelf so those will go in later.

Tires: Great tread depth but, old and sidewalls cracking. Will replace those before rolling to UT.

Brakes: Fronts have new rotors & calipers. Rear brakes getting done Thursday as they grab hard when damp and there's a pulsing when slowing down. Feels like it's being dragged so it's not the fronts. I know THAT feeling.

Carpet is certainly in need of shampooing. Tempted to fill the thing with about 4" of water and shampoo and drive it down a washboard road for 10 miles. Steam cleaning it all when I get home. For now, lots of vacuuming going on. Cleaning of windows, interior surface etc. too

Slight rusting on the doors and by the rear fender. That will take some effort but nothing major (I have tools).

Rear Heater Hoses have been disconnected and capped at the T with the T replaced with a 90* Elbow. Thinking there's some learning to be done there (probably an understatement).

Headlights were oxidized so I used an inexpensive restoration kit to suffice until I can replace them.

It drives great; nice smooth starts, accelerates nicely, doesn't pull right or left (follows contours), steering is much better than my truck, seats are in great condition save for the dog hair, paint above knee level is fantastic for a 19 year old vehicle. Guy in Oregon called to see if it was still for sale, NOPE. He was willing to go $7k. I didn't pay anything near that.

So, slow steady drive home Friday. Oil Cooler kit ordered, Hurricane 7 stands ready and three-gauge kit on the way too. "Let it begin!).

Congrats on the find! :D

For brakes, and at the risk of insulting, time to step it up to the 1 ton system all around if the PO did not have any of it done. Might get lucky and already have 3-1/2" shoes in the rear. Also, add 2" spacers to the rear wheels. After the spacer and 1 ton mods, the Burb will handle better and brake much better. Bonus is that after the brake mods, the rears will actually self adjust (but you need to really get rolling in reverse and stomp on the brakes).

For the rears grabbing, mine did that at the slightest whiff of moisture in the air (including humid days). Since I moved over to the 1 ton rigging, it only rarely happens as I suspect the difference is that rears are actually getting use now.

The carpet might clean, then again it might not. Mine was cleaned by the dealership when I bought it and appeared nice, but shortly thereafter it started to stink from the PO who must have smoked in it. Every attempt to clean only made it worse in both odor and appearance. Tried several Internet inspired stink remover methods and none worked. Only thing that reduced the smell was to leave a set of old tires in it for a few days while parked in the sun (this was not intentional, it was the end result when I had the tires changed and could not pick up the Burb for a few days.) After a couple years I yanked the carpet, installed sound deadner while the carpet was out, and installed new carpet all the way to the tailgate. Stink is mostly gone now and I am avoiding replacement of the headliner.

For the lights, you know the drill . . . They will polish, but only real cure is replacement ;)

For the speakers, chances are good that the rears (above the tailgate) are shot. They are an easy swap.

If the airbox is not OE or a completely closed box, it will likely add to drone.

3.42 gears are nice for towing. With the slushbox in direct (3'rd) and TCC locked, it puts the RPM's at 55 in a good range.

That is nice. Glad the smells are not present, I hate that. Looking foreword to seeing the improvements.

If there is anyway you could do mpg and 0-60 times before and after the hurricane 77 for others to reference without other related improvements at the same time it would be a nice info to put out there. Of coarse, guys in pickups could expect slightly better numbers since your weight is higher.

If you are getting a tune to the new turbo set up, seperate numbers to it after just the turbo then would show people bang for buck also.

If not, we'll survive- haha. I know how it goes sometimes.

What tires going on? I hate to see bfg's get a shortend life. Those tires are frigin awesome offroad and around my area, and still handle well on most any rig. Wish the made them in my 37 12.50 16.5.

Nice find. Is a K1500 4wd?

I know you're meticulous about your vehicles, but it is an 18 year old truck. Drive it hard and put it away wet. This is your used roughouse, not a new Tiguan. It will never gain in value, but it propably won't lose much value from here.

Love the cab lights.

They sell new carpet kits.

Dogs don't smell. Labrador hair is the worst to get out. Smokers suck, except coal rollers.

Save at least one or two of those tires and I'll pick them up as we pass through on October 8th after the Stanford @ Utah game on the 7th. I have one BFG with a lot of tread that I'm trying to use up, but the other BFG's I'm running opposite of it tires may not have enough combined tread get me to the end on the good one.

Thanks for the advice. The rear brakes haven't been upgraded to one-ton. Still 13 x 2.5. PO towed a small trailer around when he was active but once he hit 85, about the time his sweet wife passed, nothing. I'll have to do the fronts too as after the work on the rears got done and I drove it around town a lot, they started to pulse. The hotter they got, the worse the pulsing. Warpage. I got a set of rotors from Bill as a lovely parting gift but, no time to put them on here so, slow and steady using engine braking on the highway as much as possible.

I don't think there are any smells coming back as I'm the one doing the 'detailing.' Meaning, no stealership tricks to cover an odor until customer is off the lot. We'll see though, especially if it gets damp from wet toes. I've replaced carpet before if only in an extended cab.

I was looking forward to finally having a K-47...Surprise, the OP had a 95 6.5 truck so he changed out the K-47 for a Flat Panel, I'm guessing he didn't want to chase two different filters! Good thing I've more than one air box from Heath. The one he designed for S&B will stay on the truck and the new one he markets now will go on the Burb.

BigT. Yeah, it's a K1500. Thought I heard K2500 too when first told about it. Who knows, I'm not betting anything on my memory or hearing anymore as I'm not sure which one is failing. I'll check the part numbers on the stuff we talked about and see if they'll still work. The offer is much appreciated. As for the tires, I'll pick out the two with the better looking sidewalls as there's at least one showing cracking all the way around. Your through the state is perfect as I'm heading out again on October 9th...maybe. Coastal Texas isn't going to want to talk to me that soon after Harvey I'm sure.

Did you make it home on those tires? If so, good enough for what I need.

There is more to it than just the shoes.

Ferm did a write-up the 1 ton items some time ago:
- Rotors
- Proportioning valve (there is a TSB for this)
- Rear cylinders for a dually

Unless the rotors from Bill are 1 ton, expect warping, so consider saving them for the pickup. IIRC, BigT has had success with 3/4 ton rotors in his Burb, but not me . . .

Shoot, might just consider waiting until ready to do the whole system. Also, while there, consider stainless hard lines. Point is, doing the system as a whole will result in bleeding (the brakes) just once :)

As always, thanks. One ton conversion on the brakes is way down the list right now as, after some adventures, I've got new brakes on all four corners. They will suffice for now.

After I'd driven about 250 or so miles, I'd had enough fun with the brakes and tires and had to hit the Les Schwab in Mtn. Home ID. The 'parting gift' rotors weren't usable...run out they said. I got a second opinion when I got back from a friend who runs his own shop...run out they were. Oh well, it's the thought that counts.
Tires were hard as a rock, cracks were more visible as the tires expanded with the heat and they vibrated at different speeds only to settle down and then vibrate some more. Other than a reference, I won't mention their performance in the curves. Needless to say, I made no friends on I-84 at 55-60 MPH. Then there was the hydroplane incident at 55mph outside Baker City OR....almost lost it in a sudden downpour. Thankfully, the rear end drifted onto the rumble strips which helped bring the front end back into line and I rode it out there until the river called I-84 lowered. At 60-65 I know most tires are unstable in rain but at 55... That was a pants wetter!

Brakes...I thought I was going to lose my grip on the steering wheel....Idaho has contruction for miles with traffic crawling at 10 - 55 and back to 10 mph or stopped. All in zones posted as 70mph. After a couple of iterations of playing vehicular accordions, the truck was scary to slow down or brake.

So, new brakes, tires and an alignment (plus remove the knock-outs) on a Saturday. Truck just floated through the construction zones and outside of them, it pretty much danced down the highway.

Passed inspection after replacing the windshield fluid sprayer motor and attaching the PS nozzle. "TULKAS" rides again.

Interior detailing continues with new discoveries of dog hair caches under seats, in corners or just plain missed the first, second, third...time.

Didn't see your question when I responded above. No, didn't make it home on the tires but, I did have the two best ones saved so they're here for you when you come through. If you want a third-row seat (it needs new foam) I'll hold that for you too. Otherwise, it goes on the local classifieds cause I don't want it.

Back from a short trip out to the Salt Flats to see the World Finals.

Spent the morning rinsing the undercarriage and trying to remove the seats so I can do a deep cleaning on the carpet tomorrow. There's a lot of frozen bolts do to undercarriage rusting so, the cleaners will just have to deal with working around the seats.

Prior to leaving, I replaced the cablights with LED bulbs and clear lenses. I packed the interior LEDs that came too in anticipation of inevitable delays in the runs.

Also ordered Replacement Headlights and Taillights as well as PTWiringsolutions Battery cable set and Glowplug harness.

LMC parts for Inner Front fenders, door lock repairs, hinges etc. also showed up as I was leaving. Projects, projects, projects await...life is good.

Cab Light Lenses are good enough...LMC...'nuff said. They came as an aftermarket kit but, they were less expensive to buy that way than trying to source just the lenses. Haven't seen the headlights yet, they're supposed to arrive later this week.

Got a question for you, personally. Would you mind if I used this quote from you?
Quote:“Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars”…or buy fuel!

I really like that one!

I'll probably be talking to you, here, and comparing notes on Suburbans. My 95 has been in the family since 99 and remains just about the best vehicle I've ever own, PMD (now gone, since about (~04), and all. Love the handling, ride and utility of it.

Thanks, DW

Feel free to use the quote. Only the 'or buy fuel' part is mine anyway...I'm not that creative.

The Burb is definitely growing on me as well. Thinking hard about cancelling the reserve I have on a 2015 Touareg TDI....

What type of headlights: HIDs or Halogen?

Follow on to answer the Headlight question. I'm sticking with Halogen bulbs. They seem like fair quality. Same construction as the current units I have on the truck. Those I got from LMC and they are better than a different set up I purchased and sent back. They have the Bulb Cap on the low beam side that my current ones have and despite running the Superwhatevers from Sylvania, those have stayed put. I recall that you'd had an issue with then falling out of a set while running the HIDs. I'm not going the HID route though, had enough fun with those things. Definitely not putting them in the reverse light sockets!
