Good day all.

As some know, I have capability to tune and reflash OBDII vehicles via TunerCat II.

Services I'm willing to offer are changing your PCM VIN to the correct one and turning off your security system.

I'm working to find the abs in the PCM to turn it off, but am currently unable to do it in the program.

There is no cost to my labor (thus no cost to you) nor intent to ever recover any of my costs for the software/hardware purchase. I bought it for my own use and education and am willing to share it, au gratis.

Don't ask me to give you the program, it's proprietary and I don't own the rights. Giving it to you is piracy.

Do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars compadre. I won't be a part of that in any way, shape or form.

You also need proprietary hardware to use it so it wouldn't be any good to you if I did anyways.

If you want to spend roughly 1000+ bucks, I can point you in the right direction to buy it but then you're on your own (although I may start some "tuning tutorials" on the site once I'm comfortable to do so, don't hold your breath though ).

So, what are the nitty gritty details?

1. you have to pay to ship it to me and return shipping

2. I currently only have the capability to load a 1998 L65 program for you, so that's what you will get after reprogramming to your vin or turning off the VATs. If you want a 5 speed or another year, you need to by the VDF for your truck from Wester's Garage (99 bucks) and provide it to me to flash your specific cal.

3. This is not a business, turn around will be as quick as I can get to it but don't expect it to be done the day I get your PCM. If you want to express ship stuff that's fine, it's your coin. I will do my best to get it back out to you as soon as possible. But I do have a "day job" which takes priority. If turn around or down time is a big deal to you, I would suggest you buy a spare PCM (16216588, available on ebay or a wrecking yards for around 75-150 bucks) and send it to me instead of turning your truck into a "planter" for a couple weeks or more...

4. There is no warranty on the work, implied or other wise. It's an "at your own risk" deal. I will try it in my truck before returning it so you will know if it is working or not before I return it to you. Shipping losses are also at your own risk, but I will send it your preferred shipping methods (ie: what you paid for) and provide a tracking number (if you paid for that service) once it's out of my hot little hands.


I have been in contact with the forum moderators, they are fine with this offer as I am not selling anything. Cost recovery or otherwise. I receive NO money from this, you only pay your own expenses (IE: shipping, PCM cost, VDF, etc).

I'm not doing re-flashes for "tunes" that I have developed because (IMO) I become a seller at that point and that violates forum rules.

Plus, there's a couple guys on the forum you can buy "tunes" from already. Not looking to step on their toes.

So, worse case scenario you pay 50-60 bucks for round trip shipping (more or less, dunno), 150 bucks for a used PCM, and 100 bucks for a VDF for 250-300 bucks total with absolutely none of it going into my pocket.

Could be cheaper for you to buy a case of beer and head on down to your local GM dealer with a TECH II. Your choice.

Quick question about your VDF file. Is it a standard 98 origanal VDF file, or is it an updated 98 VDF file? I know GM made quite a few changes to there tuning for the 6.5's along about 01 or 02, and I didn't know if LYNDON's VDF's were based off of the origanal tuning or the updated tuning.

That's a good question.

I don't know for sure.

He has (IIRC) 2 listed for 98 but the cal file I have is for a 98 L65.

I've loaded it into about eight different 16216588 PCM's from various years. Works every time without a hitch.

I'm guessing it will work in a 96, but ya takes ya chances.

As to gearing, the PCM doesn't store that so no worries. The DRAC/VSSB holds the gearing calibration and sends the correct pulse to the PCM.

I wouldn't recommend flashing your stock 96 PCM if it's a 3500HD, unless you're looking to flash a spare and keep it just in case.

As mentioned, I have the necessary software and hardware to tune and flash OBDII PCMs.

But no, I won't upload a performance tune.

Just the services I've listed above.

Tuning PCM's for free would conflict with forum vendors who sell performance "tunes" and violate forum rules so that's a no go my friend.

Humm...:idea: I am betting the VDF in my 96 K2500 is old, being it has been sitting for years :sigh: and it belonged to the state any way. Since its sitting any way I may as well send it to you and have one less issue when I go to put it back on the road.

I don't know which engine I have L65 or L56 is but I do have a 98 dually with a Heath tune which I paid for. question is can you detune it from horsepower to something more for towing or would that be a violation of site rules. As I understand it you are only a ferry ride away and it's been a while since I was on Vancouver Island. When I originally bought the heath tune I had a camper but have since upped that to a trailer and ATT. So a towing tune might be more appropriate.

98 in a 96 I would say possibly not a good fit. I say this because when I was talking to Autoenginuity about some issues with their scantool program they informed me that there was some OBD1 stuff in the 96 and 97 units specifically ancillary stuff such as the ABS. 98 was the first year for proper complete OBD 11 programming. Of course it does sound kind of funky but that is what I was told anyways.

I doubt BJ would mess with one of Bill's tunes, anyway.. he's pretty good about respecting others' work. Besides, if you drive doen to Ellensburg, you can pick up some cheap beer on the way home!

He couldn't see Bill's work anyways. TUNERCAT with Lyndon's VDF files doesn't actually allow you to download what is in the ECM. The VDF IS the tune file for which you flash in. A VDF is a vehicle definition file or tune file. With TUNERCAT your simply loading in a modified tune of your own using the VDF file as a starting point. Lyndon did things this way so that others would not be able to steal copyrighted work of others. And GW is offerring a basic service that will allow you to have a stock tune that will work in any application basically, or set up a junk yard ECM with the correc t settings to go into your truck. As far as a differrent tune file in a differrent year, I don't think this will be an issue with the 6.5 so much. I know that 96-97 gassers integrated the ABS system into the ECM, and in 98 they changed PCM's and seperated them. On the 6.5's the ECM never had the ABS integrated into them. There was a change in the OBD2 data protocol though, but the only way to see if it is an issue is to try it out. I know that some have used 96 ECM's in 97-00 trucks though to disable VATS in the past.

There seems to still be a bit of confusion here. I'll try again to clarify and pass on a little good gen;

What I will do-

1.Turn on/off your vats.

2. Change the PCM VIN to yours.

3. Flash a pcm with a stock "tune".

What I won't do-

1. mess with another "tuners" files.

2. "tune" your pcm.

3. Aid in any way, shape or form in messing with another tuners files or programs.

4. Modify or reverse engineer any proprietary software of hardware for redistribution or profit.

Basically, if your truck goes "tits up" and you need a PCM, I'm willing to flash it for nothing more than your cost to get it to me and back. It will have a stock 98 program when you get it back, unless you want to buy your specific year from Lyndon for me to flash. That's a deal you have to work out with him, or send me the cash and I'll buy it from him for you. I will send you the VDF and Cal he sends me as it is yours, not mine.

YOU MUST NOT REDISTRIBUTE/SHARE/PIRATE THE VDF/CAL FROM WESTERS!

To do so is a violation of the purchase agreement with the vendor and will most likely result in him shutting down selling the files and ruin it for everybody. Personally, I can't believe he's generous enough to sell just the vdf/cal to people. Most tuners are very tight with their work. I don't blame them, it's a lot of reverse engineering and time invested.

*note* if you're not comfortable with your ability to keep the vdf to yourself once purchased, you can leave it with me and I'll make sure it goes nowhere. Next time you need a pcm its just shipping.

So, now that's out of the way it's time for a little passing of knowledge and whatnot.

Tunercat II is not the program that reads and flashes the PCM. Tunercat is merely the calibration editor.

The program used to read and flash PCM's is a separate program that comes with the package when you buy it. As delivered, it cannot read/download PCM cal files.

I may or may not be able to read PCM cal files, either stock or a modified one. The "company line" is that I cannot read a .cal/.bin from a 16216588 pcm.



Even if I could, I'd be comfortable with that from an ethical standpoint; I don't redistribute others work nor do I use the knowledge in them to sell products as my own. My personal values won't allow me do that.

Many have asked for the things I've listed above that I will not do, have gone away disappointed and will continue to do so.

The Vehicle Definition File (VDF) is merely the definition file that allows tunercat to understand what is in the calibration file and organize it into tables and values. The VDF is not the “tune”.


The calibration file (.cal) is the "tune". This is the part that holds the look up tables, switches, modifiers and constants. This is what the editor (tunercat) modifies and what the "mystery program" loads into the PCM.

You have to download the .cal file, edit it with tunercat2, then load the .cal back into the PCM and see what you get with test runs.

My program is a little different. It has real time tuning capability since I bought it through Moates. It's called RTOBDII, but it's tunercat at the heart of it all.

Basically, it comes with hardware (called Roadrunner) you can use to modify an 411 PCM (gasser) or an LB7 PCM and you can change the calibration file "on the fly". This is valuable in saving time.

For example; say you wanted to add more fuel at 1900 rpm. Normally, you would download the cal file, modify it, flash it, start the truck, drive it to see what you got, and if it’s not what you wanted shut it down and go through that all over again. This can take an easy 20 minutes a shot if you’re good at it. Trust me, I know……:rolleyes5:

With Roadrunner you pull off to the side of the road, adjust the parameter and then drive it. No shutting down, no flashing the entire cal. 2-5 minute’s tops. If you have someone else drive the vehicle, you can change the cal for them as they drive.

That’s the cat’s backside!

I’ve tried incorporating Real time tuning in the 6.5. I believe it’s possible, but there needs to be changes in the software to support different hardware that is just beyond my ability. So close, yet so far……..

As I’ve mentioned, I’ve flashed several 16216588 (OBDII 6.5 PCM) from various years for my truck and they all work.

The 98 program will work in any year 16216588 pcm.
However, I can’t guarantee it will work the other way around. IE: a 98 cal in a 96-97/99-01 truck. The cal may change pin assignments, look for different sensor value inputs, etc. I THINK it will work, but can’t say either way until it’s tried in the real world. Its buyer beware if you want to chance it or buy the proper vdf/cal from Westers.

Once you have it, I’ll flash it as much as you want (that didn’t sound right did it?). Just ship it back and forth.

Like I mentioned before, it might just be cheaper to head down to the local Goodwrench shop with a case of beer. They’ll do the same thing……if they feel like it.

So, applications for my offer are:

1. Your vats is messing up and you can’t start you truck anymore or you just want it turned off (it’s one of the most pointless anti theft schemes I’ve ever seen),

2. Your PCM just went tit’s up, you grab one in the scrap yard and want/need your VIN in it,

3. You want a spare in the truck just in case.


Just so it’s clear, I’ll say it one more time;

I will not “tune” your PCM, you get the stock .cal only.
