My Project / Work Truck

Funds are tight, the truck is going to sit for a while. Most likely I will do all the work myself this time. The shop I used is someone I work with and they only work on diesels most heavy duty stuff. I was not really happy with the work but a lot of shops won't touch the chevy 6.5. I have everything else done on the truck. The transmission was rebuild 2 years ago, pretty much everything new except the engine.

Best place to find military surplus engines? Running a 6.2 would be fine. I agree from what I have read and now learned the block is ready to be done, if I had know that last year I would have replaced the engine then.

Pull your engine and see what you have to work with first. 3 sets of heads indicated block surface issues or cracked cyl IMO. Unless maybe you are running ECT temps over 210?

Most cr@p on ebay is more trouble than it's worth to install. For $1750 more you get a updated design NEW AMG engine that you can forget about cracks on. Paypal credit...

I have 2 engines from:

http://www.boyceequipment.com/#!engines/c18ta

They need to be re-ringed when you get them, but, they test run them before shipping and give you a guarantee of some time on the engine.
Swap heads to 6.5 heads and you won't notice. Re-machine the precups on the 6.2 heads and the exhaust manifold is tight on the injectors, but, useable.

Being in a rush always costs money, pay others labor, or just buying more than needed to get it done quicker. Cheapest option -pull the thermostat crossover and see which side it is. Then pull that head and see what is going on before doing anything else.

If it is one of the new heads, try to get Odessa to not just swap the head, but have them pay for thehead gasket and intake gasket as well. If the gasket failed call the mfr and sometimes they will just send replacements as a customer service stand point.
If its the block then I would go for the military take out and rering it, use the gep heads and which ever precups are the best of what you have. Reuse your headstuds, and then figure if you keep the extra parts around or sell them of to recoup some of the cash.

Oh, forgot about the eBay question. Ignore the 506 thing. 506 is on the optimizer and the worst block ever. If it does not have the navistar logo in the valley then don't touch it, unless you go up to a p400. Get a used one from Boyce, or a new one from Leroy. Pull yours apart first though if trying to save cash. If you would rather spend the cash and never worry about any of it again, get a p400 from Leroy.
