My New (To me) Hummer take out, courtesy of Ted's Trucks 'n Stuff.

Didn't know you picked up a Ted's motor. I was considering pulling the trigger on one however decided to get whatever else I could out of this one.

Hows the install going?

Install is going slow, but only because between work, school and other projects, I haven't had much of a chance to work on it as much as I have wanted.

However, really all I need right now to install it are a pilot bushing and exhaust manifold gaskets. I'll probably get those today.

These trucks don't use ex manifold gaskets. Unless your manifolds are shot, I would not use them.. If your manifolds are in poor condition then use them.

I'd rather err on the safe side. When I bought the truck, it had gaskets. Of course, I have different manifolds and a different block now. Maybe I'll throw a straight edge on it and check it for flatness.

Now that I'm thinking about it, though, and I'll have to check the pics I took, it seems like the 506 block had gasket material on the exhaust ports.

Gaskets are a bandaid if the surfaces are messed up but make no mistake they don't hold very long. They will eventually blow out which is why GM did not use any. Lot of pressure on a Turbo motor.

Yeah The blocks and heads are cast beefier, higher nickel content, lower compression ( 20.2 :1 ), forged rods and a nodular iron crank. I've been taking some pictures of mine but have yet to post them also.

Mike
do the optimizers really have forged rods?

The only changes I've made to the engine are ARP head studs and I had a brand new set of ceramic coated pistons that I couldn't justify not using, and I had a set of square precups that I installed in the heads.

But other than that, it was definitely worth the money to get the new blocks and heads.

My mating surfaces were straight, I threw gaskets on them and a year later everything is okey dokey.

If gaskets are available, I always throw a set on. It's worked for me for the last 25 years.

Blowing gaskets has as much to do with the quality and the installation as anything else.

But, the OE installed many manifolds without and they also are still going strong....

I just installed new +.010 head gaskets in my Ted's motor, only because I was putting in ARP studs, but My motor looked brand new under the valve covers and had all the cylinder cross hatching in the bores....
If I had to make a guess, it would be that the only time this motor ever ran, was on the test stand at Ted's where they fire them up to check oil pressure and do all the compression testing.

If you are looking for a much better option over the GM castings, you would be very well suited with one of these International / Military engines, very low mileage engines if any miles on them. Not to mention I think you would be very hard pressed to even rebuild a OEM GM block for the price of getting a Ted's "Optimiser 6500". The Engines from Ted's are far superior to the weak inferior GM block.

As far as bullet proof.... Well, these things aren't Cummins motors or D-Max's..

I had $ 2,050.00 into the purchase of my engine and fuel lines from Ted shipped to a business 1 mile from my house.

Mike

Just a question you say you have 2050.00 on the motor with lines? Did you make a deal? I know this is a two year old post. The price is on his site for 2800-. Just kicking the idea around about buying a Teds engine, albeit the block and cooling system in my truck is supposed to be the best design out of all the 6.5s.

Well I was thinking of doing a re power. I have a 2000 k3500. My truck is running good, no overheating no loss of power. But after I installed my ATT I noticed blowby coming from the cdr. My block is supposed to be problem free in regards to cracks overheating and such. I just think for 2800 that's a lot of motor.

I don't really know. AFAIK, starting from 2001, the block alloy has been improved, block is beefer, cooling of heads was improved, cylinder walls are beefer too.

2005-2008 may not have major upgrades. I believe the main difference is the mileage, which explains the difference in price.
