My Burb is NOT overheating when towing...It's spring!!!

I already have the DMax fan. This had more blades than the DMax. Maybe get it for a backup.

I'll have to go back ASAP and see if I can find which vehicle it was in. It was setting loose, either inside a Burb or in the bed of a pickup. This yard is probably the most expensive yard in the area, but it is the cleanest.

Yesterday I was junk yard scrounging, digging through 90s era Burbs and pickups, and one DMax pickup. Somewhere there I saw a fan that was either 11 or 13 blades (don't remember now which). When I saw that my first thought was "would this be any good for towing?". It was on a thread on fan clutch so it may have been the DMax.

Since you guys are talking fans at the moment, would this fan be worth grabbing?

Don

No it isn't worth it. You don't know the pitch of the fan blades and it may not pull enough air at our RPM range. I have already tried a Trailblazer fan and was pulling a hill without AC because of that mistake.

The Kennady low temp clutch tends to lock up 100% and unlock towing. I use lower temp T-Stats and I think that helps them unlock. I swear by the lower temp clutches to keep you under 210. It helps the AC on my Burb with the Dmax fan. The 20" steel also worked well for me towing.

Well I had a little extra time this afternoon so I went to the junkyard with a tape measure. The 11 blade fan I think I saw earlier this week was only 18.5" diameter. However I did for sure see a 9 blade 21" DMax fan. It was setting loose in the bed of the pickup. It was still attached to the fan clutch, but the clutch was damaged so I'm a bit leary of it. It was almost closing time so I had to continue with my origional search, intake air system flex hoses. I'm going back early in the morning to finish my air intake flex hose search, so if I have time I'll chack out the fan blade much more closely.

Spoke too soon. It ran hot this weekend but not too bad. Climbed alot of hills with an even bigger camper than I had and it hit 215-220 a few times but most of the time was 195-210. I think a fan clutch mod or Kennedy fan is in order. One thing I did notice is the radiator is substantially bigger than the one in my 93. the 93 only has a 2 core. The burb has a 3 core . Wonder if that is because it was an ex FD truck ?? I think a lower clutch engagement will be the ticket.

Not sure but I don't recall every seeing a rad this big in one of these trucks. Atleast not in any I have owned. I can't see the cores themselves as this system uses the pressurized coolant bottle so no rad cap to look into. I can only guess but it is much thicker than my 93. In realty if the engine fan kicked in sooner I doubt I would have run as hot as I did. She worked hard today.

The 93 is only a 2 core rad? Fail...

Perhaps an all aluminum radiator would help the burbs semi-warm situation Kenny?

There's a place online that sells them. Look up Genesis Radiator in google. I'd link to it but the last time i did it was removed.

I stuffed a huge 4 core rad into the K-5. It ran cold most of the time when it was N/A, even with the 3 core rad that had a cracked side tank. Hopefully it won't get too hot with me stomping on the skinny pedal now that it's turbo'd. The 4 core rad wass near 100% flow and nearly spotless inside when the rad shop tested and cleaned it a few months ago.

So they do make a 4 core for OBS ?? O thought so. None of the autoparts stores have one listed. My CUCV needs a new rad and it's a 3 core plus I wanted to see if an OBS 4 core rad would fit a NBS truck. It looks like it might other than a different coolant overflow.

I think a better clutch is in order. Even when it did finally come on around 215-220 I did not get the roar that the hayden SD clutch provides. I would just buy a Hayden SD clutch but I figure if I buy the Kennedy fan I can take the 9 blade from the burb and put it on the 93 which only has the 6.

I still wanna try putting a 4 core brass rad in one of these. I think it would solve alot of problems and initial measurements looks like it will fit. Since I need to buy one anyway for the CUCV I will have one here to "test".

Oh yea. There's a 4 core available. It's an absolutely huge radiator, and quite heavy. I snagged this one for $35 from the junkyard and it looked fairly close to new. Had the rad shop pressure test, clean and re-solder the weak spots for another $80. Still not at the cost of buying a 3 core brand new.
