Ok heres my problem, Have a 97 chevy silverado pickup with a 6.5 vortex diesel engine. It has been sputtering and I can't figure it out. I have replaced fuel lines from the tank to the lift pump, new lift pump, new black box (now grey) which i moved to the top of the manifold with a heat sync and extension harness. The truck runs fine at idle, but when I get going it starts sputtering and bucking. does my engine have an ops? if so where do I find it, and could that be my problem? What about a transmission sensor? (just throwing things out). Thanks for any help.

put a piece of clear tubing on the return line coming out of the IP and see if there are any air bubbles

Is there a good flow of fuel from the drain valve? Any fuel leaks around the FFM?

checked the t handle drain for flow today, while the truck was at idle. there was a constant flow, but not very strong. the truck sputtered a few times, but didnt stall. how do I check the IP for air? what is the FFM ?

FFM = fuel filter manager, or the fuel filter/water seperator/heater that is behind the intake manifold.

Do you have, or have access to, a fuel pressure gauge? You need to check the fuel pressure coming from the LP.

Don

2 fuel lines coming out of the IP. 1 is supply (the bigger 1 on top) the other is the return at the front of the IP. Replace that short section on the return with clear tubing (1/4") and watch for bubbles

Did you change the fuel filter?

Yes I have changed the fuel filter several times. In order to connect the clear line to the IP, do I need to take off the manifold? If there are bubbles what next?I plan on doing it this weekend along with getting a fuel pressure gauge to check the lift pump. Also when im going the speedometer won't go above 65 even though I know i'm going faster. Then the needle drops to 0 and bounces around. There are no leaks around the FFM (thanks Don).

where is the PCM (pulse code modulation) located on my 97 chevy dually 6.5 diesel engine. could that be my problem? (Thanks for the diagrams Turbine Doc)

no you don't need to take off the manifold to put on the clear line. The PCM (powertrain control module) is behind the glovebox but it sounds like you are talking about the VSSB (vehicle speed sensor buffer) which is behind the glovebox also.

ok so please bear with me as I am not much of a mechanic(Thank God for this site and all of you) I need to pull off the dashboard to get at the PCM. and the VSSB is also behind the glovebox. Would the PCM cause all of this sputtering? I don't think it's a dirty sock in the tank, I changed the whole assembly in Aug of this year.

no need to pull the dashboard only the glovebox toget to both the pcm and vssb. pcm is a possibility just not likely.more often than a bad pcm are poor grounds or connections

PCM is Powertrain Control Module (computer) found behind the glovebox a PCM is seldom cause of a no start issue they are pretty robust.

PMD/FSD Pump Mounted Driver (if still on IP) Fuel Solenoid Driver if remote located off of the IP is the "brain" of the IP and those have issues more than a PCM would, no good test for them other than to rule out everything else but that, and then swap in a spare
